Friday Factoid #1 for Employers:
Take Care of Your People by Taking Care of You

Staying up late at night and coming in early in the morning eventually will catch up with you.  Sure, you need to complete the operational and financial quarterly reports, create meeting agendas, refresh website content, order marketing material, and lease business equipment while catching up on your overdue LinkedIn, Facebook, and email. Yet, your department is in disarray. Your accounting manager is experiencing complicated health issues, your sales manager just went through a bitter divorce, and the third receptionist in the last 45 days just quit!

It may appear from your lists of tasks that you have absolutely no time to take care of yourself or your people.  Yet you do. It is a matter of reallocating your time and making your people the priority.  Give us a call regarding our private career services for additional solutions.

Make sure you eat healthy meals, exercise regularly, and laugh often as you encounter the humorous side of life.  At the end of the day, it is our employees who can contribute to a more balanced or chaotic workplace.  However, the common denominator is you. Take care of your people by taking better care of you.

Friday Factoid #2 for Employees: Is Planning a Process that We Should Entertain Daily"?
By Darryl Baker, Sr. Business Partner

Angelo & TJ in SantoriniDo you think planning is a process that we should entertain daily?  I totally believe in planning and organization.  To me both are equally important.   However, I must admit that I admire those who can fly by the seat of their pants and do things without planning.

There are several benefits to planning ones' day including: the ability to accomplish more in less time, the ability to coordinate with managers and others' schedule more successfully, and the ability to express realistic expectations based on your planned schedule.  However, the problem more often than not is the execution of the plan and commitment to the plan.

We all have lives with family, friends, doctor's appointments, and yes "work timelines and deadlines," that can change often.  However, those who have executed and written plans can better adjust their schedule when plans change.

Give yourself some extra free time this year by creating realistic plans that you can generate, execute and commit to without it being burdensome.  Keep in mind, even when you plan your day, things may not work out as planned.  However, at least by having a plan you will be ahead of the curve when facing whatever comes your way.   Remember, failure to plan could lead to poor work performance like missed deadlines and scheduled appointments.   Therefore, the answer to "Is planning a process that we should entertain daily"?  The answer is a resounding YES!

Weekend Reflection #1:
      Service to Others
TJ
By: Cassandra Littlejohn, Sr. Business Partner

"Service to others before service to self," is one of our three core values here at Confidential Search Solutions.  But what does it really mean?  In essence, you get our best even on our worst day.  Now, you must know that this requires a strong commitment when challenges occur.

For instance, it's 4:45 p.m. Friday afternoon and you're about to go home after a very hectic week.  The phone rings and it is another problem in need of resolution.  What would you do?  We suggest that you take a deep breath, listen carefully, and address the matter in a professional manner.  People will appreciate that you took the time.

Let's take it one step further when it is the next day and you've just completed a team assignment.  The boss has requested a meeting for debriefing.  All team members are present.  Everybody knows that one member on the team did not pull his/her weight.  However, this is the time to resist the temptation to talk about the inability of others.  Instead, encourage the team for their commitment to getting the job done.

Learn to give credit where credit is due and identify opportunities for growth.  Service oriented leaders always give others credit and take any necessary complaints or blame.  However, others seek the credit and enjoy redistributing the blame. As business men and women your understanding of service to others before service to self can become one of your tools in your toolkit for your professional success.

Weekend Reflections #2:  Renewing Your Frame of Mind in a Traffic Jam

Have you ever been in a traffic jam and wondered why?  You get to the bottled neck point where the traffic begins to flow and you see absolutely no reason why the problem existed.  Yet it caused you to be late and you became very frustrated

There are several reasons traffic jams exists (highway constructions, auto accidents, poor street design, increased population demands on main thoroughfares, etc.).  Likewise, there are several ways to avoid or minimize them.  Our Top 5 Solutions to minimize or avoid traffic jams are listed below:

  1. Develop at least one or two alternative driving routes to your destination
  2. Leave an extra hour earlier to avoid routine jams
  3. Utilize public transportation when available.  You can use that time to read a good book, or catch up on some extra work, or sleep
  4. Car pool with others to avoid the frustration of personally driving during rush hour
  5. Telecommute from home when possible and utilize the modern conveniences of conference calls and video conferencing

While traffic jams can be very frustrating, you can learn to manage them by taking advantage of some extra time doing beneficial things like listen to a new best-selling audio book, play some favorite CDs, MP3s, and tapes to brighten up your day, or take the time to learn a new language.

Whatever it is that cause a person frustration can also benefit them if one learns to address the identifiable problem differently.  The next time you are in a traffic jam, be thankful.  It may be a sign to get you to renew your frame of mind.
