A Message From The "Chair"

Rose Read,
Local 39 Chair
Hello everyone and welcome to our first edition of your Local 39 AUPE Newsletter. We thought it was fitting that we send out our first edition as we say farewell to 2011 and welcome in the 2012 New Year!

This year promises to be both bright and exciting and I can't wait to share some of the activities that we have coming up over the next few months.

Your Local Council has a ton of information that we want to share with you. We have been hard at work over the past few months working on a communication plan so that we have several means of sharing the information with you.

Our Website

www.aupelocal39.comTwo of our members, Tim Fountain and Tracy Jewers have taken on the project in their spare time of revitalizing our website. They have made it more "user friendly" and have taken on the task of keeping it up to date. During the summer the site was moved from it's previous provider to a new provider and the web address was updated. You can now find us online at www.aupelocal39.com Very easy to remember. Our thanks go out to both Tracy and Tim for their continuing work and dedication on this project.

Campus AUPE Bulletin Boards

Did you know that we have several bulletin boards on the SAIT main campus. Keep an eye out for them and watch for updates and notices to be posted in the new year. The boards aren't that big so you may have to really look for them. Here is where you can find 2 of them.

There is one in the John Ware building just as you go in the main south doors to go to the Marketplace. It is located on the east wall.

There is another by the cafeteria in the basement in the Senator Burns building.

BLACK WEDNESDAY Campaign

Please remember to support our Bargaining Committee by wearing black on Wednesdays in January. It is through our solidarity that we are able to send a clear message to the Management of SAIT that we demand a reasonable and fair collective agreement.

I hope you enjoy our newsletter. Please send us your feedback as communication is very important to us. Your opinion matters. Emails can be sent to info@aupelocal39.com or to me directly at chair@aupelocal39.com

Bargaining Update
January Calendar
Arbitration Dates 2012

We know that this is the number one topic on everyone's mind as we have been without a new collective agreement for 18 months now since July 1st 2010.

The arbitration dates are set for January 27, 30 and 31, 2012.

Previous Bargaining updates can be found on our Local's website www.aupelocal39.com under the NEWS section.

If you have a chance you may want to review the Bargaining Update of July 7, 2011 to be reminded of what our position presently is as we have been waiting for the arbitration dates since the beginning of July 2011.

We are asking you to show your solidarity and support to our Bargaining Committee and "Wear Black on Wednesdays" in January.

Help us send a message to management that AUPE Local 39 won't back down in its struggle for a reasonable and fair collective agreement!

"Calgary Area Council" - The Social Arm of AUPE

Are you interested in the FUN side of AUPE? How about "Family-Oriented" Union Events? Do you have to come up with a "Team Building activity" for your work group? Or, maybe you're a new employee and new to the Calgary area and looking to meet some new friends.

Calgary Area Council has something for everyone. "Area Councils" are the social arm of AUPE. They consist of groups of union volunteers who organize, coordinate and run family-oriented events. These events are run throughout the year for AUPE members and their families.

We encourage you to go to the Calgary Area Council website to view all the information about ongoing and upcoming events and activities.

AUPE/SAFA Combined Christmas Party
We had 175 members attend our Annual joint AUPE/SAFA Christmas Party at the Four Nines restaurant on Thursday Dec 15/11 for some great times and fabulous food.

Our 50/50 raffle raised a total of $150.00, $75 of which went to help support the Calgary Woman's Shelter and $75.00 to our lucky winner. With the $75.00 from the 50/50 plus the funds raised from the raffle that SAFA was holding we raised a total of $433.10 for the Shelter. We would like to thank you all for your support.

Eleven lucky members each won a door prize of a $25.00 Gift card to a major outlet like Future Shop, Home Depot, Safeway or a Gas card from Petro Canada.
