Break the Mold Award
Dec. Break the Mold

Kara Nixon, 8th Grade Language Arts Teacher, Gray Middle School is the December 2011 BREAK THE MOLD Winner.

Kara continually goes above and beyond to involve her students in both leadership and community based activities. In the classroom, she creates a positive learning environment for all students. She accepts students for who they are and helps them strive to be successful in everything they do. Outside of the classroom Kara works countless hours teaching students the importance of helping those less fortunate in our community through efforts like the "Christmas Drive" which benefits local families in need. As Student Council Co-Sponsor, Kara worked with students to collect donations of denim which is then used to help insulate homes for families in need. Kara does all of this with a smile on her face. She is always pleasant, supportive of others and at every turn offers a pat on the back to make someone's day.

Gary Middle School is both proud and fortunate to have Kara in their school.

11 Students from Boone County Schools help comprise Boone County Youth Cabinet (BCYC)

The purpose of the BCYC is to improve the County's ability to positively affect the lives of young people and better coordinate our community's efforts and services for young people.  The group is comprised of juniors from each high school in the county and is coordinated by the Boone County Human Services Department under the Fiscal Court.  Representatives from each high school in Boone County (public, private and parochial) are nominated by the school administration, then selected by the BCYC Board based on their applications.

The Cabinet meets at a series of monthly events.  Members benefit by receiving training in areas of leadership, public policy, civic responsibility, etc.   They are given the opportunity to offer perspectives on youth issues to the Judge/Executive and Fiscal Court and learn about decision-making and how to influence public policy.
