Superintendent's Message

Welcome back for the 2011-2012 school year! Unfortunately, students were only in the classroom for a little more than a day when an earthquake hit the East Coast on August 23, closely followed by Hurricane Irene on August 27. When we make decisions to close schools and offices due to inclement weather or power outages, we will post the latest information on our school system website and send an email to all school system employees. In addition, we just added a new link that you can visit to sign up to receive countywide emergency notifications via email, PDA, cell phone, or land-line. The safety of students and staff is our utmost concern, and we will continue to look for new ways to reach out during emergencies and school system closings.

The first day of school went very smoothly, and I commend staff for all of your hard work over the summer to prepare for the opening of school on August 22. All school sites were clean and prepared for the new school year, bus routes were assigned for more than 81,000 students, and 94% of the 121,413 schedules created for students were error-free. Staff in all divisions and offices worked hard behind the scenes to ensure all processes ran smoothly, and I appreciate your efforts!

In spite of the budget challenges we faced this year, our students continue to make gains in academic achievement. Over the summer, we received results of the 2011 Maryland School Assessment, and found that students are continuing to make gains in spite of dropping revenues. Although we begin this year with fewer staff and resources, our commitment to ensuring students have what they need to succeed is stronger than ever. Working together, we will continue to strive towards our goal that all students will graduate college- and career-ready.

Initiatives

The following are some key initiatives that were discussed during the most recent Executive Cabinet meetings:

Transportation Task Force

The Transportation Task Force Kick-Off Meeting was held on August 3. Subcommittees were assigned, and will meet through October to strategize on ways we can streamline and improve bus transportation. The Council of Great City Schools has offered to assist in this process by conducting an audit of our transportation services.

Constituent Services Office

The new Office of Constituent Services has been established to assist with the resolution of unresolved issues. The office will also help the school system identify trends and areas that receive the most concerns.

Performance Management Analysis & Planning Process (PMAPP)

Cabinet members are currently reviewing all departmental Performance Plans. A subcommittee has been formed that will review the plans to ensure that proposed measures are consistent with Cabinet's focus, and to develop robust metrics.

Emergency Preparedness

Following a discussion of issues that occurred during the recent earthquake, Cabinet members are reviewing current emergency preparedness procedures and making recommendations for updates.

PGCPS Selected for $75 Million Wallace Foundation Grant

Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) is one of six urban school districts that has been selected by The Wallace Foundation to participate in a new $75-million "principal pipeline" initiative. This national initiative aims to help school districts develop a much larger corps of effective school principals and to determine whether this improves student achievement across the district, especially in the highest needs schools. Read more...

Achievements

PGCPS Hosts First Back to School Fair

The school system hosted its inaugural Back to School Fair at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt on August 20. The event provided parents and students with the chance to learn more about our programs and schools, visit with student service vendors, and meet some school system staff. It was a great success!
