What Information Are You Throwing Away?

I started DataChasers® in the late 1990's, practically the beginning of true computer forensics. In fact, I was at the first IACIS (International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists) training when Shawn McCreight rolled out his now infamous EnCase™ software under his company's banner of Guidance Software. EnCase™ unequivocally paved the way for computer forensics as we know it today.

Other computer forensic platforms soon followed, providing a robust science for examining computers. Previous software packages were barely sufficient when examining HDDs (hard drives) with a capacity measured in megabytes (roughly a million bytes) and totally inadequate when dealing with HDDs measured in gigabytes (1,000 megabytes).

One of my earliest professional endeavors was the purchase of a box full of "wiped HDDs at the Pomona computer show in California. I was assured that all the HDDs had been cleaned and there was absolutely no recoverable information on the HDDs.

I went to work examining the HDDs, and among the data I successfully recovered, as a neophyte examiner, was... Read More

Hazards of Public Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi hotspots, a location at which you can connect to the Internet, are prolific...almost everywhere. I read recently that by the year 2020 Wi-Fi enabled locations will blanket the entire country-everywhere, every rural community, every desolate stretch of highway, every mountain hideaway. That is just eight years from now, and I think that is a conservative estimate. I'll be surprised if this coverage does not become a reality by 2015. Remember the famous 1949 Popular Mechanics quote: "In the future, computers may weigh no more than 1.5 tons." Or more recently, Bill Gates' now famous 1994 miscalculation of: "I see little commercial potential for the Internet for at least ten years."

But yet, here we are, jumping on the Internet almost everywhere. But how safe is it, really? Let me put it this way: it's about as safe as Russian roulette with more bullets left in the gun. Anyone near you at that free public Wi-Fi hotspot, with a modicum of knowledge, can see literally everything on your computer, copy it from your computer, and you'll never know it.

There are simple precautions you can take to insure that your data remains your data. First, ... Read More
