Apple iPad Forensics to Help Your Case

We were at breakfast with two other couples when one husband asked his wife, "What do you want for Christmas, a new cell phone or an iPad®?" Tough question! But that started a whole new conversation between the other husband, a techie like myself, and me about the forensic possibilities and problems facing the iPad®. The iPad is more than a phone, but short of being a full-utility computer. There are many knock-offs, but none that comes close to being quite there yet, which is why the introduction of the iPad catapulted Apple to the top of the industry, regardless of what the rest of the economy looks like.

According to Wikipedia, at its release in April 2010, Apple sold 3 million iPads in 80 days, and a total of 14.8 million by the end of the year, claiming 75% of the worldwide tablet market. By the time the iPad2 was released in March 2011, more than 15 million had been sold, and by this writing the total is over 25 million, representing more than 83% of the U.S. tablet market.

This is important because as the iPad continues to infiltrate the personal and business world, it becomes more urgent to recognize the need for the device to be analyzed forensically.

Protect Your Firms Data with Cloud Backup and Storage

I am what you would call a backup freak. In more than 20 years of using computers I have never lost any data...none! This in spite of multiple computer changes and upgrades, two severe crashes, and more than a few [dozen] user-errors. My success is largely due to learning from mistakes others made by not having their files backed up or having them backed up incorrectly. That and my horror at the thought of losing data a client was relying on for litigation.

For a long time my process for protecting my files was simple, but burdensome. Every time I saved a file, I saved it again to another device. When that became too onerous, I backed everything up once a week, and monthly I backed up my backup and stored the backup to the backup off-site. But even at that, seven days of data is a lot to lose; so I backed up my backup and stored it off-site, then backed up my backed-up backup and stored it in a different location, then...well, you get the point of how ridiculous this can become. And then, like a dream come true, came cloud backup and storage.

Cloud backup/storage is... Read More
