Electronic Data Discovery Prerequisites

"What do I have to get for you?" That is, without a doubt, the second most common question we are asked by attorneys at conferences. The first most common question is, "What, exactly, do you do?"
What we do is computer forensics; gleaning information from computers to assist attorneys in arguing their case. What you get for us determines how well we can get that information for you. Your forensic computer examiner's greatest challenge is having the information to see the flaws in the opposition's case. And getting the correct discovery for your forensic computer examiner is critical to facilitate discovery of your smoking gun!
CHALLENGE THE EVIDENCE! Never accept the evidence at face value to be accurate. Getting the correct and complete discovery is essential to your examiner being able to facilitate your putting on a good defense.

Don't Get Hacked

Yes, It Can Happen to You:
I have tracked this for a few months, compiling my own non-scientific statistic: approximately twenty percent of the calls coming into DataChasers include a hacking concern. Quite frankly, most people are unnecessarily concerned, but many have real cause to worry. The following suggestions will help keep you safe from hackers.
Password Vulnerability:
Sequential numbers are commonly used as passwords, e.g., 1-2-3-4. The next most common is in-line numbers on a keyboard, e.g., 2-5-8-0. These types of passwords invite hackers. Passwords should never use a word that can be found in a dictionary, and shouldn't be repeated for multiple uses. I use a system that includes the name of the program, substituting a letter for a symbol, and ending with a number that relates to the program name. Example: WORLD; password would be "WO@RLD15," wherein the 1st vowel is followed by a symbol and "O" is the 15th letter in the alphabet. Regardless of the particulars, make a system that works for you to minimize your exposure.
Know Your Threat Level:
You might want to Google "Symantec Threat Report" for a real eye-opener. You will discover the real dangers of suspicious websites with a lot of pop-ups and nefarious links. Most are encountered when... Read More
