G.O. Elections in the Middle School...this coming week...stay-tuned...

Dear Shulamith Family,
In this week's parsha we read about Avraham Avinu following the commandment of Hashem to go to ארץ ישראל.  For us at Shulamith School Israel is constantly on our mind.  Countless times in our tefillot and benching we remind ourselves of the centrality of ארץ ישראל.  An important part of our new Tal Am Ivrit program (grades 1-3) is an emphasis upon Ivrit and ארץ ישראל.  The art that we create, the music that we sing, the lessons in all our subjects all connect deeply with Israel.  As you know, this focus permeates--and has always permeated--our school environment--since the founding of Shulamith over 80 years ago.   Although the challenges of מדינת ישראל today are different (but in some ways the same) as the challenges that Israel faced when Shulamith School was founded, our commitment and dedication to Israel has not wavered.  Like Avraham Avinu, and Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi, we are constantly moving towards  ארץ ישראל.

"לבי במזרח, ואני בסוף מערב"

So much is happening at our school that it is hard to keep track.  As a follow-up to Parashat Noach, this week our Kindergarten and Nursery went to the zoo.  The girls were so excited to touch and pet the animals.  At the end of last week we had a visit from Anthony of the Nature Company.  The girls were so excited to see, hear, touch and learn about the animals that Anthony brought.  He especially emphasized how many animals are able to camouflage themselves.

Tzedaka--Pushka Campaign--Mrs. Leslie Berger
In Pursuit of Mitzvot-"לך-לך"

I applaud and thank Dr. Garry Abberbock for leading our "Pushka campaign". As a pediatrician, who deals with בריאות הגוף, "health of the body" for children, Dr. Abberbock, also appreciates the importance of בריאות הנשמה, health of the נשמה. Here at Shulamith School, the faculty, administration, parents and Board, work very hard on בריאות הנשמה, by providing the finest Torah and General Education for our students.

The first מצוה (and נסיון, test) that Hashem gives to Avraham Avinu, begins with the expression "לך-לך", get up and go (to Eretz Yisrael). The importance of dynamically pursuing a mitzvah is expressed very clearly in this phrase. Let us all join Dr. Abberbach-and לך-לך-run with alacrity to fulfill the mitzvah of חינוך of our girls!  I strongly encourage you to participate in our Pushka campaign.

Gilad shalit Home-2 Thanks to Mrs. Biderman, our Art Teacher, for creating such a beautiful tribute To Gilad Shalit--In honor of his return home!

Kristallnacht Remembrance Planned for This Coming Wednesday

The City of Munich, in co-operation with the Department of Jewish History and Culture of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University opened an exhibition at the Jewish Museum, Munich under the title "I am alive! It is a miracle - the fate of a Munich family during the Holocaust." The exhibition ran until April 11 2002. The exhibition tells the story of the Blechner family during the Holocaust. The City has meanwhile built a new Jewish Community Centre and Museum. The former Museum was housed in the Jewish Community Centre at 27 Reichenbachstraße, Munich. This building is where Mina Blechner lived the last eighteen months of her life and from where she wrote many of the letters to her son, Jacob in Switzerland.

Mr. Mark Blechner, of Boston, will be visiting us next Wed., Nov. 9th, in remembrance of Kristallnacht. Pictured here is his uncle:

Pushka Campaign--Please Join With Dr. Abberbock in Supporting Shulamith School
Note from Leslie Berger

The school will be soliciting the help of our in house creative artists to decorate their own zedaka cans  to use at home and bring in when full to their Morot.   We hope to use the Zedaka Pushkas in school.  "Zedaka ( and learning to give) starts at home", so let's put our children's  valuable Jewish education on the forefront of our  minds. This pushka campaign is to keep funds coming in to make our school  the best it can be for our children. '  Special prizes will be given to those students that bring in full cans . Also, the total that each class raises in school will be noted in the school newsletter as cans fill up.  Look out for Dr. Abberbock's letter and the Pushkas.

 Thank you, Leslie Berger

 Moshe Rabbeinu and NASA

...Hashem taught Moshe Rabbenu on Mount Sinai things that NASA is only discovering today, thanks to their advanced technological equipment. And, Moshe Rabbenu didn't have satellites or atomic clocks - he didn't need them.

My wonderful friends and colleagues at Israel National News have made a beautiful sanctification of Hashem's name by comparing NASA's latest research on the lunar cycle to what our sages in Talmud have known for the past thousands of years:

The Talmud states that the lunar cycle spans '29.5 days and 793 fractions of an hour'. In Talmudic terms, the hour is divided into 1080 parts.

793/1080 = 0.734259 hours.

0.734259/24 = 0.03059 days.

29.5 days + 0.03059 days = 29.53059 days for the moon to travel around Earth.

NASA Research concluded that the lunar cycle is 29.530588 days, two 1/1000ths of a second short of the Talmudic figure. More advanced research in Berlin came to a figure of 29.530589 days, only one thousandth of a second short of the Talmudic figure.

The Sinai tradition of the span of the lunar cycle is thus corroborated by figures reached via advanced satellites and atomic clocks.

Put down the astronomy book and start learning Tractate Rosh Hashana, the Rambam's laws of the new moon, and the Tiferet Yisroel's commentary on Mishnayot. If you're looking for a degree, go to university; if you're looking for wisdom, go to the Torah.

...Hashem taught Moshe Rab benu on Mount Sinai things that NASA is only discovering today, thanks to their advanced technological equipment. And, Moshe Rabbenu didn't have satellites or atomic clocks - he didn't need them.
