Celebrate your Scottish heritage THIS FRIDAY, April 6th.
Tartan Day is celebrated globally on different dates and for various reasons. Since 1997, Americans have officially honored Scottish heritage on April 6th. The date was chosen to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Arboath in 1320, which was in part an influence on the American Declaration of Independence.
Today, over eleven million Americans claim Scottish and Scotch-Irish roots -- making them the eighth largest ethnic group in the United States. Celebrations of all sorts happen all over our country throughout the month of April, so be sure to seek out local activities near you!

Tartan History
One of the most important symbols of Scotland and Scottish Heritage is the Tartan. The woven material, generally of wool and having stripes of different colors and varying in breadth, has a long and complex history. The earliest origins are from around the 3rd-4th centuries, as tribes sought individual identities. The Dress Act of 1746 attempted to bring the warrior clans under government control by banning the tartan and other aspects of Gaelic culture. When the law was repealed in 1782, it was no longer ordinary Highland dress, but had become the symbolic national dress of Scotland.
Originally, Highland tartans were associated with regions or districts, rather than by any specific clan. It was not until the mid-nineteenth century they became associated with Scottish clans or families. Do you know your tartan? Would you like to find out?
