Superintendent's Message
With our winter season passing quickly, all of the activities for March are upon us. During the month of March, students in grade levels 3-8 are administered the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). This statewide assessment is administered during the dates of March 6-16, 2012. The test questions are built upon the current Illinois Learning Standards. New this year, additional questions are included within the test that are derived from the recently revised state standards, which are referred to as the New Illinois Learning Standards incorporating the Common Core. These revisions contain more rigorous learning standards for Math and English/Language Arts. During the 2014-2015 school year, the statewide test will be revised to include only test items based upon the New Illinois Learning Standards incorporating the Common Core.
The seven Itasca School Board Members that serve our district are busy participating in recently required workshops. These workshops are mandatory due to the approval of a Senate Bill that directed the completion of trainings that include Open Meetings Act, Leadership Training and Evaluation Process.
Currently, the District is busy developing a draft budget for the 2012-2013 school year. Prior revenue sources and funds are being reviewed closely. In conjunction with the development of next year's budget, the Board Members are reviewing the district's goals and objectives for the coming year.

F. E. Peacock Middle School

Peacock Science Fair
Each year on the first Saturday in February, Peacock hosts their Science Fair for students at the 6th through 8th grade levels. This year's event was held on Saturday, February 4th, which featured projects that were based upon the scientific method in experiment format. Students were provided with extensive instructions and support from their science teachers during class time leading up to the fair. Teachers helped students identify, organize and document their experiments for display on February 4th before a panel of judges who themselves are practicing scientists as well as high school science teachers.
Wall of Fame Induction
Over the past several years a number of distinguished Peacock graduates have been inducted into the school's Wall of Fame. Inductees include a practicing physician, a NASA engineer, a former NFL player, two mayors of Itasca, along with other noteworthy former Chargers. On February 26th at our scheduled band concert, we honored an additional former graduate, Ms. Stacey Larson, a member of the Peacock class of 1984. Ms. Larson is the Director of Music Education and Assistant Director of Bands at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. She is an award winning educator who has taught music and conducted both public and private school bands including the highly acclaimed Lake Park Band during her illustrious career.
Spring Musical
This year's spring play at Peacock will be the hit musical, Willy Wonka with production to begin in early January. In prior years, the musicals have involved over a third of our student body in a variety of jobs that reach far beyond the "on-stage talent" including scenery construction, set design, lighting and sound, along with stage management. Dress rehearsals will be held during the week of April 23rd with opening night scheduled for Friday, April 27th at 7pm, along with a second performance on Saturday, April 28th also starting at 7pm. While the public is invited to attend either presentation, we strongly encourage advanced ticket purchases as same day seating availability is usually very limited. Ticket information has recently become available and will soon be posted to the district's website at itasca.k12.il.us. All ticket purchases will be handled by Peacock's Music Booster organization.

Franzen Intermediate School Wins Award!
We are pleased to announce that Franzen Intermediate School was recently awarded the 2011 Academic Excellence Award by Dr. Christopher Koch, State Superintendent of Illinois! Across the state, 438 schools earned the Academic Excellence Award for 2011. Many of these schools receive national recognition for their long-time exemplary performance.
To earn an Academic Excellence Award, a school must meet the following criteria:
- Schools must have made Adequate Yearly Progress in 2010 and 2011 as required by No Child Left Behind.
- In schools serving grades 8 and below, 90 percent of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and mathematics for the three most recent school years.
- In high schools, 80 percent of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and mathematics for the three most recent school years.

Franzen School Represented at State NCLB Conference
On Tuesday, February 7, 2012, a team from Franzen School presented at the State of Illinois No Child Left Behind Conference downtown Chicago. This 3-day conference is held annually for educators in the State and includes innovative presentations from those schools and teams leading the state in regards to instruction, assessment, technology, or community involvement. The Franzen team was represented by Mr. Jeff Murphy (principal), Mrs. Danielle Rosales (Grade 5 Teacher), Mrs. Holly Copot (Grade 5 teacher), Mrs. Wendy Hanczar (Grade 4 Teacher), and Ms. Beth Schacher (ELL teacher). The team's presentation was entitled "RtI: Making it Work for General Ed Teachers" and focused on the school's schedule, instructional deliveries, and the implementation of interventions as deemed necessary by the mandates of RtI. The team was proud to represent all of the Itasca District #10 community. |

Raymond Benson Primary School

Benson Students and the Arts
Exposing primary students to the arts is something that is taken seriously at Benson Primary School. Beginning in preschool, students participate in a number of activities and events related to art, music, physical education and literary art.
In preschool and kindergarten, students experience the feeling of singing for family and friends at their grade level winter programs which are filled with the sounds of the season. First grade students present an "Informance" to family and friends displaying much of what they have learned via the first grade music curriculum. Second grade students perform a winter "play" for all to see. This includes speaking parts for select students and singing parts for all students.
First and second grade students explore art appreciation with Mr. Whitney, the K-5th grade art teacher. Currently, first graders are completing a fabric based project in which they are learning to weave and stitch. They are also learning appliqué techniques. Second graders are using clay to learn about the pinch pot technique and how to use the score/slip method to attach several bodies of clay together. Additionally, first and second graders will soon begin work on murals which will be silently auctioned off at the April Celebration of Learning.
Physical fitness is important for all age groups. Preschool students are instructed in physical education activities by their classroom teacher while kindergarten through second grade students receive instruction from Karen Engel, physical education teacher at Benson and Franzen.. Currently, students are using hula hoops to strengthen their locomotor movements as well as their balance and coordination. In March, students will participate in Jump Rope for Heart, which will raise funds for the American Heart Association.
Reading is big at Benson and Mrs. Reuter helps build enthusiasm for reading and the literary arts via her Media Center activities. Students in preschool have been learning about creatures which live in the sea and have created their own fish made from geometric shapes. Kindergarteners listened to Tikki Tikki Tembo and learned the meaning of their own first name. They then graphed and compared the length of their first names and also practiced syllabication. First graders listened to the story, Bunny Money and then made their own wallets and paper money. They also learned that a mole rat is not just a character in Mo Willems book, but is an actual creature living in Africa. Second graders combined non-fiction resources with the fictional Iktomi series written by Paul Goble to learn about the Plains Native Americans. The students learned the many uses for buffalo hides and constructed teepees made from flour tortillas. Additionally, all Benson students are participating in Pennies for Patients, which raises funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Illinois.
While reading, writing and arithmetic will always be of utmost importance, District 10 continues to support a well-rounded school experience for all students.
Reponse to Intervention
Creating a strong academic foundation for all students remains top priority for faculty and staff at Benson Primary School. Reaching students where they are at instructionally requires a team effort and the use of differentiated materials. Through the implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI), primary students are assessed via a universal screening instrument to determine their instructional level. This means that all students are given the same test to determine what they know and what they have yet to master. Once this is determined, students are instructed in both whole group instruction and small group instruction. For those students who need additional support, the small group instruction may occur multiple times per week with the students' progress being monitored on a weekly or biweekly basis. This cycle continues throughout the school year in an effort to meet the child at his/her instructional level with additional support being offered as an opportunity to increase his/her skill level in an academic area. Implementation of RtI has caused our primary school to use certified and support staff in new and innovative ways. All staff members take responsibility for assisting with instruction. This looks different at various grade levels but may include having the physical education teacher introduce high frequency words for students to break apart while completing their exercise circuit, or having the special education staff work with small groups of regular education students to offer interventions in various academic areas. While the primary building is well underway with the implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI), we still have work to do. In an effort to fully implement the Social Emotional Learning Standards and support the behavioral side of Response to Intervention (RtI), the primary building will be exploring components of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) to create consistent school wide behavior expectations for all students so that they are available and equipped to learn all that the primary school has to offer. |
