Fall 2010 Newsletter
Superintendent's Message

The beginning of the 2010-2011 school year has been a great success.  With students entering our school buildings in August, they returned to staff members who were eager to serve the needs of our youth.  Building facilities and classroom materials were well prepared for the incoming students.

Communication is of high importance to our employees in Itasca School District, as well as our School Board members.  In an effort to share information with our community members, this electronic newsletter will be distributed several times each year through the use of e-mail addresses.  By having this means of communication, we will have the ability to inform our families of important events as they occur.

Students in Itasca School District continue to score well on assessments mandated by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).  The tests measure the performance of students and schools throughout Illinois.  As in the past several years, more than 90% of the students in Itasca School District attained the standards as measured by these assessments.  We are very proud of our students' scores.

Staff members in our schools continue to focus on meeting the academic instructional needs of our students.  To attain this goal, the district's employees are utilizing a strategy entitled "Response to Intervention" (RtI).  With the assistance from building principals and teachers, teams of staff members work together to analyze each student's attainment of skills as measured through a variety of assessments.  From this analysis of data, educational opportunities are identified that enhance a student's learning.

As educators, we realize that families are an important component of every student's educational experience.  Our intent is to work collaboratively together in order to maximize each student's potential.

Budget

Public Act 94-0234 of the Illinois School Code requires school district budgets to be balanced.  During the January 2010 Meeting, the Board of Education for Itasca School District 10, directed the Administration to reduce expenditures by approximately $460,000 in order to present a balanced 2010 -2011 Fiscal Year Budget.  This was accomplished by the Board and the Education Association signing a letter of agreement which maintains the salaries for certified staff at the same levels as the 2009 - 2010 school year.  The Administrative staff also kept their salaries at the same levels as the 2009 - 2010 school year.  With meetings led by Mr. Dan Aggen, substantial cuts were made to building supply accounts, technology, before and after school transportation and teacher stipends, which includes clubs and certain student activities.  The Board of Education and administration of Itasca School District 10 are always working with the school community stakeholders to help maximize educational opportunities for students in a fiscally responsible manner.

Buildings and Grounds

Extensive in-house summer building projects were completed as the buildings were made ready for the return of students and staff. Projects accomplished over the summer included interior cleaning of facilities, as well as repair and maintenance of such areas as roofs, flooring, and lighting.

The facilities play a contributing role in maintaining and improving all aspects of the school's environment, programs and activities, and provide value to the entire community.
