BACS invites all to a Diversity Forum
| |
Parents, grandparents, and all interested community members please join us on Tuesday evening, January 24, at 7:00, in Heilman Hall for information and discussion about how BACS is working to increase a sense of belonging for all of the students in our school. We will report on where the Diversity Team has been, where we are now, and where we are headed; we will give an overview of the In-service we had this fall on increasing cultural competence; and we will provide an opportunity for valuable discussion and Q&A. We welcome anyone in the community who may have questions or curiosity about this important topic. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided. We are looking forward to the forum and hope that you can join us!

Dress Code Reminder
| | With the weather now getting a bit cooler (if not terribly cold) students are wearing extra layers for warmth. Please remember that the dress-code compliant layers include only: white, red, or navy sweaters, fleece jackets, or vests. Hoodies are not permitted in school. Students are allowed to wear hoodies to school but not during classes or transitions. |
SAPTE LESSONS
| SAPTE Lessons will be given for 3rd grade on Tuesday January 31.
The Sexual Abuse Prevention and Treatment Education (SAPTE) lesson is part of the health curriculum. It is adapted to the states of the children and taught one time in each grade.
Parents are encouraged to preview the lessons available in the School Pastors' office. An alternative activity in lieu of the SAPTE lesson will take place for those students whose parents selected this option.
Parents are invited to preview the lessons in my office. They are set out on a cart near my door and labeled with a large sign. SAPTE materials can be read in the school but are not available for copying or home reference for three main reaons. 1. Some are under copyright 2. Materials are designed especially for the classroom setting which entails: a. close adherence to the script b. the presence of a 2nd adult in case of disclosure c. having a counselor on site in case of disclosure 3. There is a slight chance that copied materials would unwittingly get circulated in advance of a lesson As chair of the SAPTE program, I believe there is merit in our present approach while being as open as possible as to their contents. We encourage parents to know more about this subject as they are the primary protectors of children in the prevention of child abuse. Phil Schnarr - School Pastor

Strep Throat
| This notice is to make you aware that we have had quite a bit of strep throat at BACS this year. New cases have been cropping up regularly since the beginning of the school year. Since it is showing up at all grade levels, I thought I would put out a general notice so that you are aware of its presence at BACS and know what symptoms to watch for.
Symptoms include: sore throat, red throat with white patches, enlarged tonsils with white spots/grey or white covering, difficulty swallowing, tender or swollen lymph nodes in the neck, headache, fever, and abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea and rash.
Strep throat is transmitted via airborne droplets. The incubation period is 2-5 days.
Strep throat can be spread to others from the onset of symptoms until 24 hours after antibiotic therapy has begun.
Children must be kept at home until they have completed 1 full day of antibiotic therapy and are fever free for 24 hours off of fever reducing medication.
Please remind your children to practice good hand hygiene - coughing and sneezing into their sleeves, disposing of tissues in the trash can and washing hands frequently with soap and water. Please also remind your children not to share drinks, cups, eating utensils etc.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Book Fair Thanks
| All of the teachers and staff at Bryn Athyn Church School would like to thank everyone who gave books to our classrooms and the library for Christmas. The Book Fair last November raised over $2,000 which doubled into over $4,000 "Scholastic Dollars" for the Library to purchase books and other items. What is really great is a huge portion of our Book Fair sales go directly back to our classrooms and library! Thanks to all our volunteers who worked the Fair and to all our patrons! See you next November!

Social Arrangements and Bus Notes
|
Please remember to make social arrangements before school and send a bus notice request to Mrs. Childs (if needed) early in the day. Parents are welcome to e-mail such a request to Liz.Childs@bacs-gc.org if their children have trouble remembering to deliver notes in a timely way. Mrs. Childs cannot write last minute bus permission notes while she is outside doing bus duty.

Ode to a Tuesday Lady, Doreen Cooper
|
The Tuesday Ladies
At the B.A. School Had Doreen as their head And she was no fool. She knew all the ways, At saving small scraps, To use another day As a backing perhaps. If things weren't done Or not needed soon She still stayed awhile Even past noon. She'd staple and laminate, Punch holes and cut For 25 years, but Never in a rut. So we miss our Doreen Every Tuesday we meet But know she's busy Seeing people to greet. By Betty Morey in honor of Doreen Cooper who passed just before Christmas. All of us at BACS would like to express our gratitude for her tireless work as pioneer and leader of the volunteer troop we fondly call The Tuesday Ladies.

Happy New Year, great news! So far this year we have raised $2817.30 in the Giant A Plus program! We have 3 more months to keep swiping Giant cards for the School. If you haven't registered your Giant shopper card with Liz Childs, it is not too late to help us raise even more without spending any additional money of our own! Also, please continue to pick up Giant Scrip cards (and other grocery store's) from the Pastors office. BACS receives 5% on all gift cards purchased (they even work at the gas pumps!)
Finally, there are a few KidStuff coupon books left if anyone would like additional.

Food for Thought
| Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me I shall be saved (Jer. 17:14).
This month at BACS our school theme emphasizes health care and healing. The Rev. Jay Barry invited two people who work in this field to come tell their stories to our students in chapel last week. Juliet Lindrooth spoke of the incredible healing that can happen when her well-trained therapy dog, a Golden Retriever named Bear, visited hospital patients. Our own school nurse, Kathy McQueen, attested to her love of serving the health needs of people and convinced us that any one of our students could become a nurse or a doctor if that's what they really wanted to do and were committed to it.
In worship we heard how our bodies can be like a temple for the Lord. Taking care of them through good nutrition and lots of rest makes them stronger vessels for living the happy and productive life that is the Lord's intent for each of us.
When we get sick, there is nothing better than to know we have medical professionals, friends, family and the Lord caring deeply for us. Here's to a healthy winter (relatively speaking). Rev. Phil Schnarr School Pastor |
