One of the elements of great teaching is the ability to teach essence and let students extract the principle or lesson from essence. As a teacher, I accept the premise that the spiritual effects of yoga practice are more important than the physical effects. Why overemphasize technique and results when they can transform by becoming mindful of their process?
Through my years of teaching I have discovered that the essence of a great teacher lies in three interpersonal qualities: having a soft heart, sharp mind and vibrant body.
Having a soft heart encompasses compassion, sensitivity, feelings, friendliness, patience and respect. A sharp mind includes being articulate, creative, and innovative, while vibrant body means being enthusiastic, charismatic, positive, humorous and inspiring. These three qualities form the soil in which the seeds of technical knowledge and teaching experience can root and grow vigorously, bearing fruit for a lifetime.
And guess what? Here's the catch: you possess all three of these qualities. You have varying degrees of each and as you continue to connect with your surroundings, you continue to learn and absorb new elements of a soft heart, sharp mind and vibrant body. You are a teacher to others, some you have yet to meet. Wellness Tip this Week: Shed light on the inner teacher in you. Syneregize and spread your interpersonal qualities, experience and techinical knowledge to guide "students" you come into contact with, to a transformational place where a radically positive shift can take place in body, mind and heart. This may simply be about taking the time to show you care, expressing gratitude for something that's overlooked, or asking yourself what was the exchange of knowledge or lesson from a recent interaction.
