Recently I had an interesting conversation with a dear friend of mine in Chicago who also is an independent contractor. We were discussing how difficult yet important it is to establish a sound reflective rate for the services you provide. Whether you are considering looking for a new line of work, are currently employed or are self-employed, what truly matters is knowing your self worth before you come to the negotiation table.
Since we are not formally taught to talk about money openly in society, we tend to shy away from the topic. Just watch someone's body language when you ask them about how much money they make? What their house cost? Or even how they organize their finances with their partner. The reality of it is, it makes people feel awkward and sometimes offended.
