National Drug Facts Week 
NDFWNational Drug Facts Week (NDFW), November 8-14, is a health observance week for teens. The goal of NDFW is to shatter the myths about drugs and drug abuse. NDFW encourages community based events that give teens a physical or virtual space to ask questions about drugs and get factual answers from a scientific expert. NDFW is an initiative of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), which supports most of the world's research on the health aspects of drug abuse and addiction. Community Program Highlight
PACT Kaneohe Community Family Center 
PACT Kaneohe Community Family Center (KCFC) is a resource for families in the 96744 zip code area where people feel comfortable asking for assistance.  The Family Center partners with individuals, families, Castle Complex Schools, community leaders, organizations and funders.  Services build strong families, encouraging them to be active participating members in the community and help prepare their children to be successful in school.  
 
PACT KCFC is a member and facilitator of Community Works in 96744, a coalition that promotes healthy living, community-wide 5Rs values: Respect, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, Relationships and Resiliency, and the prevention of underage drinking, smoking and use of illicit drugs.

Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training (SAPST)
October 11-14, 2010; 8:30-4:30        Hale Koa Hotel ($5 parking)
Cost:  $150, includes participant manual, lunches and refreshments
Deadline:  October 1, or the first 25 registrants 
22 ADAD approved CEUs available
 
The SAPST curriculum was developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention's National Center for the Application of Prevention Technology and is designed to provide both pre-service and in-service prevention professionals with up to date research- based information in the prevention field.  The focus will be on current evidence-based practices for community prevention programs.

In an attempt to standardize the collection and management of Hawaii's health data and support the goal of the Healthy People 2010, the Department of Health (DOH) established the Hawaii Health Data Warehouse or HHDW.   
 
This blog posts a weekly podcast featuring Dr. Darryl Inaba (who was recently in Hawaii to present on brain research and substance use disorders) and tackles issues such as:  PTSD & Ecstasy, Tech Addiction, Raves & Club Culture and more.
 
Recovery Month is an annual observance that takes place during the month of September.  This month highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible.  Hawai`i events include:  2010 Recovery Walk & Dry Run, September 18 in Kapiolani Park; 2010 Waimanalo Backyard Jam, September 18 at the Waimanalo Quarry; click here for more events around the state.
