More than three decades of research supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has proven that addiction is a complex brain disease characterized by compulsive, at times uncontrollable, drug craving, seeking, and use that persist despite potentially devastating consequences....
When two disorders or illnesses occur simultaneously in the same person, they are call comorbid. Surveys show that drug abuse and other mental illnesses are often comorbid. Six out of ten people with a substance use disorder also suffer from another form of mental illness....
While research shows that one's brain reaches its maximum size between ages 12 and 14 (depending on whether you are a girl or a boy), it also shows that brain development is far from complete. Regions of the brain continue to mature all the way through a person's early 20s.... |

PACT Kaneohe Community Family Center PACT Kaneohe Community Family Center (KCFC) is a resource for families in the 96744 zip code area where people feel comfortable asking for assistance. The Family Center partners with individuals, families, Castle Complex Schools, community leaders, organizations and funders. Services build strong families, encouraging them to be active participating members in the community and help prepare their children to be successful in school. PACT KCFC is a member and facilitator of Community Works in 96744, a coalition that promotes healthy living, community-wide 5Rs values: Respect, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, Relationships and Resiliency, and the prevention of underage drinking, smoking and use of illicit drugs.

The SAPST curriculum was developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention's National Center for the Application of Prevention Technology and is designed to provide both pre-service and in-service prevention professionals with up to date research- based information in the prevention field. The focus will be on current evidence-based practices for community prevention programs.
