A member of the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club will give a presentation then everyone is invited to an observation session outside with some incredible telescopes.  Hopefully we will have clear skies. The Photography Contest is drawing to a close!  Get your entries in before the Library closes at 8:00 on Tuesday, July 31.    

 

The summer reading mascot, Silverwing, has recently been sighted about town at Talbot's and Jolie Tea Co.  If you spot him, stop by the Library to enter a raffle.

Join us in the parking lot for a festival of fire engines, emergency trucks, cruisers, snow plows, a United States Customs & Border Patrol K-9 Unit and more!  Brought to you by the Fire, Police and Public Works departments of Hamilton and Weham, Dodge's Tree Service, Mix 104.1, and by the Department of Homeland Security.     

 

Bubbleology Wed., Aug. 8 from 6:30-7:30. Join us for some of the largest bubbles you've ever seen!  Explore the mysteries, science, and art of creating these incredible bubble sculptures.

School required summer reading lists and copies of books will be on display for check out in the Teen area, visit the blog for complete lists linked to the catalog for quick requesting.      

   

Art Pastels with Gregory Maichack.  Thur., Aug. 2, 6-8.  Get your hands on professional grade materials and amazing guidance from a professional artist.  This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners to advanced artists.  The theme is "Art of Georgia O'Keeffe: Modern American Abstraction".  Registration is required and there is a $5 materials fee due at sign up. 

 

The next Teen Think Tank meetings are on Thur., Aug. 9 and Sept. 6 from 6:30-7:45.    

Settlers Game Club  Settlers of Catan game boardA Settlers of Catan (click here to learn how to play) strategy board game club for teens (ages 11-19) will meet 10 to noon, on Sat. Aug. 4 & Sept. 8.    

BOM: Battle-Gaming of Massachusetts

Sat. from 10- 4. Play and learn a variety of tabletop strategy battle games such as Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, and Brikwars.  To join this illustrious group of gamers, simply show up.   

  

Henna Tattoo Party & Bollywood Movie  Tue., Aug. 28, 3:30-5:00. 

Henna tattoos provided by Deepal Vora: There will be classic as well as contemporary designs to choose from, or if you have one of our own, Deepal can do that too. Deepal uses all-natural henna powder (no black henna) that is safe on the skin. A Bollywood movie will be shown while you wait your turn for a tattoo. This teen program is FREE. Dying to get a jump on your academics?  Sign up for a Practice PSAT, hosted by Kaplan, on Sat., Sept. 22 from 10:15-1:00.  The testing is free & so are the results.  A full-length proctored PSAT practice test shows students what to expect in a test-like environment.  Students will receive a comprehensive analysis of their performance from Kaplan, detailing individual strengths and weaknesses. Low light photography program
Low Light Photography Workshop
On June 19, 8 teens attended the Library's Low Light/Paint with Light Photography Workshop with Toni Carolina. Two weeks later on July 3, the group met again to mount and hang their work in a show in the Young Adult area of the library. Stop by the teen area on the second floor of the library to view the low light/paint with light photographs, as well as the College Art major's summer show of freshman work currently on display. Both shows will be up through the end of August.

Return to Vietnam: A Photo Essay

In 2011 historian Joe Carlin returned to Vietnam with his youngest son, Barry. They spent 19 days traveling 1,200 miles from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) documenting their adventures in pictures. Marvel at the beauty of the country, and the abundance & freshness of the markets! Learn about the daily life of the Vietnamese in the cities and in remote villages and see how these proud people are rebuilding their nation after more than a century of war and occupation.
This program is funded by the Friends of the H-W Library.

The Orient Express is mired in a snowdrift, millionaire Samuel Ratchett is dead, his berth is locked from the inside. The train is full of his enemies, and Hercule Poirot is challenged to find the killer.

Mystery Mayhem meets Tue., Sept. 11 at 10:30.  The theme is: "Playing with Death: Murder in the Sports World."  Featured titles are:
Harlan Coben's One False Move, Janet Evanovich's Motor Mouth, Dick Francis' Dead Cert, Tim Green's Double Reverse, James Swain's Loaded Dice, and Robert B. Parker's Playmates
The October 9th  theme is: "It Must be One of Us: Mystery on Islands, Trains, and other Isolated Locales" with 5 other titles to delve into.

Literary Luncheon meets Tue., Sept. 18 from 11:30-12:30, bring your brown-bag lunch.  Leaving Van Gogh by Carol Wallace is a meticulously researched novel portraying Van Gogh's final days and the friendship that may or may not have destroyed him. The Oct. 16 meeting will discuss The Union Quilters by Jennifer Chiaverini.

Monday Night Book Group meets the 4th Monday of every month at 7:15 pm. Sept. 24 will feature Dogtown by Elyssa East.  The optional title for summer is Abby Aldrich Rockefeller by Bernice Kert. Oct. 22: Eternal on the Water by Joseph Monninger.
 
6th Annual Kite Day!
Saturday, August 11, 10 - 4
Bring the whole family, and a neighbor or two, to the Birch Plains Field at the Beverly Airport for a festival of kites.  Come as a spectator or a kite flyer, or build your own kite there for $5 per kit.  Refreshments are available from "Something Different Cafe".  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Wenham COA, Hamilton COA, HW Recreation Department, the Hamilton Wenham Rotary Club, and the City of Beverly Recreation Department.
