Greetings!
"...From emphasis on pronunciation to inquisitive questions as to how can a dog be Blue (Blues Clues, Nickelodeon book), an inseparable team emerges that is simply relentless in this noble quest for wisdom." "The library received enormous attention from the children. Their excitement and joy seemed to have no boundaries. The elated, excited and energetic enthusiasts (children) were keen to occupy the room since the news of the inauguration broke in the village... I did a reading session with a group of 25 - 30 kids. It was a story-telling book called 'The Puppy Who Wanted A Boy'. I simply loved it when I found myself surrounded by a crowd of children so engrossed in the story. It was an exhilarating experience!"
These reflections expressed so well by volunteers from our library projects are really what inspires us to keep the Bookwallah vision alive. Bookwallah has been able to share the gift of imagination with over 400 children who live in orphanages & children's homes and 700 local community children permitted to access select orphanage libraries. We transformed spaces and built seven beautiful Bookwallah libraries of imagination in India and Indonesia where resources and interiors of this type are scarce and uncommon, inspiring these children who have endured incredible hardship to share in the joy of reading.
Our programs and approach are proving to be successful as a result of factors including: quality books, easy accessibility of the libraries (located in their place of residence), holistic approach which guarantees the books are being read, and the overall vibrant interior design for the experiential element.
This holiday season, we ask you to do two things:
- Visit www.bookwallah.org and help us double what we accomplished so far. As a reminder, we are a 501(c)(3) organization, so please take advantage of the year end tax deadline and donate now.
- Forward this email to dear friends, caring family members, colleagues, and of course, your rich Uncle Charlie! Spread the word!
Special mention this quarter goes to Howard Newman of LOEB who generously donated a large warehouse space for Bookwallah's book collection and distribution activities and Clive Midgen and Durga Prasad Satyanarayana who donated and shipped over 5,000 storybooks and chapter books to India.
These are no words to describe how much we appreciate the many more donors, volunteers, local partners, media, and supporters who took a leap of faith and invested in Bookwallah's beginnings.
Happy Holidays!
With gratitude,

"Juhi"Juhi's mother died and her father remarried. Her new step mother did not want to take care of her and so her father was forced to leave her at an orphanage. Juhi is a very quiet kid and doesn't share her thoughts easily. You have to ask her a lot of questions before she opens up. Juhi is very interested in the reading sessions and likes Drawing and Kho-Kho. Juhi moved up a level since the reading sessions began and can now read books with 2-5 sentences/page.
|
 | "Nandini"
Nandini's parents are homeless and beggars in the streets of India. Her alcoholic father abused both wife and kids. An organization found Nandini and her sister and brought them to an orphanage. Nandini can read faster than any kids of her level. While she can express her thoughts well, she still needs help with grammar. Her favorite hobbies are Cricket, Dancing, and Reading. Nandini has shown improvement since the reading sessions began in June 2011. |
 | "Manisha"
Manisha's father left her mother and siblings alone with no financial support after he remarried. Manisha's neighbors/relatives brought Manisha and her sister to an orphanage. Manisha is the loudest of the lot of children who live in this orphanage and has ego clashes with her sister. She gets very excited when we do an activity. Manisha can now read books that have 6-14 sentences per page. |

| interested in a 2013 trip to India or Indonesia? | |
Bookwallah will host volunteer and study trips to India and Indonesia in 2013. Get an opportunity to visit our projects, build a library within an orphanage/children's home, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We are considering 2 types of trips:
1. Volunteer working trip which includes building libraries, reading and interacting with the children, and a few cultural activities throughout. These are great trips for all volunteers including high school and college students who are really interested in rolling up their sleeves to get the job done! Dates to be determined.
2. A study trip to visit projects in a region, devote time reading to the children, learn about key issues, and visit the cultural sites of the region. Dates to be determined.
Our 10 day agenda, specific locations, and final packages are being planned.
If you would like to join us in any of these trips of a lifetime, please contact Anju Ghai of Speciality Events and Travel at anju@specialtyplanner.com.

Siddharth Kurkure
|
It is always an honor to have kids like Siddharth Kurkure volunteer their time and services to help Bookwallah. Siddharth is a 15 year-old sophomore at Pinewood School in Los Altos Hills, California. Siddaharth has done a tremendous job in reaching out to local bookstores and publishers for donations. He writes, "In my spare time, I enjoy helping out in local and global communities....My main goal is to help educate children in India deprived of education. These are typically kids who live in extreme poverty or have no parents and live in orphanages."

Gaurav Malhotra
|
In the field of work we do, we find there are some people who talk and other people that do. Gaurav Malhotra is a person who took action. He really came through when Bookwallah needed an individual to help jumpstart, manage, and implement the SOS Children's Village project. With almost a superhuman effort, Gaurav was able to get the job done. The beautiful library at SOS Children's Village was successfully launched and will now be a source of inspiration for over 200 children from the home and an additional 200 children from the local community. Gaurav's background includes Barclays India.
Other special mentions: Deepa Bagal and Women In Nielsen, Sunita Casula for connecting us to Clive & Prasad, and Susan Costin for organizing and creating beautiful quilts to be used in our libraries of imagination.
