Greetings!
The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities was proud to be named a Richmond History Maker by the Valentine Richmond History Center last month! It was a special honor to be recognized for our work in the category of "improving social justice." We were particularly acknowledged for a 300% growth in the number of programs delivered annually over the last 6 years. Thank you to our school partners all across Virginia for sharing in our success! As always, please contact our office by phone at (804) 515-7950 or by emailing Ali Thompson, Director of Education & Training, or Jonathan Zur, President & CEO, if we can offer more direct support of your work. |

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
Educational Equity Initiative
The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' Educational Equity Initiative develops educational stakeholders who are passionate, committed, and prepared to lead efforts to eliminate disparities based on race and class in all areas of school life and academic achievement. Through interactive and engaging workshops, participating educators learn about how bias and prejudice affect schools, learning, and teaching, while developing strategies for creating more supportive learning environments. Such programming is built off of the premise that the process of institutional transformation of our educational system must begin with a process of personal transformation on the part of the individual stakeholders within that system.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES
Holocaust Education
Our friends at the Virginia Holocaust Museum are hosting a free workshop for middle and high school teachers on November 12, 2011. "Teaching for Change: Using Genocide to Promote Upstanding" will provide educators with content and methods to teach students about genocide and inspire them to be agents of change. Contact the Virginia Holocaust Museum to learn more.
Additionally, a new book by Robert A. Gillette explores the support that the Jewish community in Richmond provided to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. "The Virginia Plan: William B. Thalhimer & A Rescue from Nazi Germany" tells an important and previously untold story about our history. Mr. Gillette is a retired educator and is available to speak to school groups. Contact Jonathan to learn more. |
