How to Make Your Resolutions STICK!
When making and executing resolutions, focusing on the sweeping end result can sometimes undermine our own efforts. Psychologists agree that making key behavioral changes as well as creating small incentives effectively keep people on track to achieving their goals.
Below are three tips to making and sticking to your New Years Resolution.
1. Recognize and Remove Temptation - If you are trying to replace bad habi ts with good ones, this Associated Press article says to cut the rituals linked to bad habits themselves. According to psychologist, Loran Nordgren, people often overestimate their ability to resist temptation. Those hoping to lose weight, for example, fail to recognize activities such as eating on the cough while watching TV as a ritual that could potentially sabotage a new year resolution. Why?...
The brain is to blame. "A dopamine-rich part of the brain named the striatum memorizes rituals and routines that are linked to getting a particular reward" - Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse
Environmental cues (the couch, the TV, etc.) trigger the striatum rendering some behaviors virtually automatic. Simply watching less TV, or keeping junk food away from the couch area could dramatically help you stick to your goal.
2. Bet On Your Success, Literally - You, and I, and behavioral economists alike know it all too well: People extremely dislike losing money. David Rose, founder of Vitality, says, "The specter of losing money is twice as motivating as the possibility of gaining the same amount of money."
A new company, StikK.com leverages this exact motivator to help keep people working towards their goals. Users pledge money to a charity of their choice and can even designate an "anti-charity" (an organization users would not typically support) as the beneficiary of their money should they fail to meet their goals. Read more about this money-motivating method.
3. Know HOW to Form a Good Habit - We've heard it before: It takes 21 days to form a habit. Turns out, it's true. However there are other techniques that help keep you from bouncing back to your old ways during the 21 day stretch, such as (1) Focusing on One Good Habit, (2) Working Into it Gradually, and (3) Piggy-Backing it with Other, Already-Formed Habits and Routines. Read more in this Gawker article.
