Great Glasswerk: 9/11 Memorial by Paul Greenfield
This week we are showcasing the work of conceptual and glass artist, Paul Greenfield, who has crafted an amazing piece dedicated to the men and women who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
Location:
Upon hearing the news of the devastating 9/11 tragedy, Greenfield felt compelled to do something. "The events of that day had a profound effect on our nation and myself," says Greenfield. "The moment I saw these terrible events I wanted to help in some way, and as a New Yorker living in California I felt very helpless."
"I would like this memorial placed in a public setting... for those who will benefit from seeing it." - Paul S. Greenfield
Greenfield indeed did something: He designed and--with the help of friends in the glass industry--completed, not one, but two glass memorials. One was made on behalf of all casualties, and the other for the public servants who gave their lives on that fateful day.
The Fire Department's Los Angeles headquarters now houses the 4-foot memorial dedicated to emergency workers. However, Greenfield is still searching for a permanent home for the larger memorial featured here.
Fabrication and Specs:
Glasswerks cut the one-inch thick PPG glass to its pentagonal shape which was then laminated using DuPont interlayer. The structure stands at 6 feet tall and weighs about 500 lbs.
Performance Water Jet expertly cut out the twin tower building and four jet planes to achieve a silhouette effect.
Lastly, over three thousand names of all who perished on September 11 were then etched onto and gilded on the glass surface.
Greenfield is a completely self-taught, conceptual and glass artist who boasts 40 years of experience in the field. He has created pieces for Warner Bros., Bob Dylan, and other notable figures.
