Eyes are the windows to your soul...

and your health

Eyes and Overall Health

They say your eyes are the windows to the soul. They are also the windows to your health because they allow your eye doctor to see what's going on inside you.

Did you know your eyes are the only part of your body where eye doctors can look directly at internal, functioning blood vessels? These offer clues and warnings of serious diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), diabetes, and even some types of cancer.

A comprehensive eye exam can serve as an early detector of serious health problems before other symptoms occur.

Vision Insurance

What is Vision Insurance?

Vision insurance is a type of health insurance that entitles you to specific eye care benefits defined in the policy.

Vision insurance policies typically cover routine eye exams and other procedures, and provide specified dollar amounts or discounts for the purchase of eyeglasses and contact lenses.  Some vision insurance policies also offer discounts on refractive surgery, such as LASIK and PRK.

Potentially high costs of routine eye examinations and prescription eyewear can be of real concern, especially for large families. You might be able to defray at least some of these costs by looking into acquiring vision insurance for yourself or better understanding the plan your company already provides.

Vision insurance only supplements regular health insurance. Regular health insurance plans protect you against financial loss due to unexpected eye injury or disease.

Vision insurance, on the other hand, is a wellness benefit designed to reduce your costs for routine, preventive eye care such as eye exams, eyewear and other services.

Short Term Medical Coverage

About Short-Term Medical Insurance

from

LIVESTRONG.com

Overview

Short-term health insurance, also known as temporary insurance, is medical insurance that offers coverage for a short period of time. A short-term insurance plan typically lasts six months or less, according to John Williams, a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters and vice president of Employees Benefits Group, Inc., an insurance brokerage and consulting firm in Bethesda, Maryland.

Purpose

Short-term health insurance is a way to make sure you don't go without coverage due to temporary situations that leave you without insurance. This type of health insurance may be appropriate for newly hired employees waiting for employee-sponsored insurance to kick in, temp or seasonal workers, people on strike, military discharged personnel, early retirees and people experiencing other life changes causing a gap in health insurance coverage, says Williams. As of 2010, the COBRA law allows employers to extend coverage after a worker leaves the job, but short-term insurance may be less expensive, according to Assurant Health.

Features

Short-term health insurance covers basic expenses that may be incurred during a serious illness, accident or medical emergency. Expect the policy to include office visits, laboratory tests, ambulance charges, hospitalization and prescription drugs, says Williams. You can go the physician or facility of your choice. Short-term insurance plans are not renewable, but you may be able to apply for another temporary plan if there have been no significant changes in your health status, according to Assurant Health. Don't expect coverage beyond a year, however, cautions Williams.

Goodbye Old Friend: The Retirement of the Food Pyramid

As you may have heard by now, the Food Pyramid has been retired. The new icon for healthy eating is a plate-about half the plate should be fruits and vegetables, about 25% whole grains, and the remaining 25% lean protein. We too have been using a similar plate icon for years, and find it to be a great tool when considering what to make for dinner each night, or how to make your plate when dinning at a buffet. Just remember the MyPlate image and make your plate match MyPlate.

With that said, there are a few other rules you should be mindful of. When it comes to fruits and vegetables, make sure you are eating a wide variety. Foods that are different colors benefit your body in different ways so shoot for incorporating at least five differently colored fruits and vegetables into your diet a day.

Also, try to stir away from high sodium foods such as pre-packaged soups, frozen and even dine-in restaurant meals. You may be wondering where sugar fits into this new image. Well, there are certain items that are not featured as main food groups but that are certainly okay to consume in moderation. Some sugar and some fat is good for you, just remember that you should try to cut down as much as you can because more than likely, the foods you are eating probably already contain enough of both of these without needing to add more to your diet. Some ways to help you cut down are to cook with less oil by lightly spraying your cooking pan instead of dredging it in oil. To cut back on sugar, simply avoid sugary drinks and leave the dessert for special occasions.
