Frank Ambrosio Lecture, DeSanctis on Dante

This fall, Frank Ambrosio, Company co-Director, was
Award winning actress Anna Galiena, Italian Embassy
Actress Anna Galiena performed Canto V in Italian
invited to present a lecture on "The Heritage of Francesco DeSanctis."  Part of the commemorative events marking the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification. The lecture series celebrating Desanctis, of which the Washington event marked the start, will travel to Embassies of Italy in France, Egypt, and Russia, before concluding in Rome. Frank's contribution considered the influence which DeSanctis, Italy's most important literary critic and the first to offer a unified vision of Italian literature as a whole, on the tradition of interpretation of Dante, especially The Divine Comedy.  Frank shared the program with former American Poet Laureate, Robert Pinsky, who read from his own translation of The Inferno, and with noted Italian stage and screen actress Anna Galiena, who did an interpretive of lectures  reading of Inferno V , the Paolo and Francesca episode, in the original Italian.

Deborah Warin, Battista Sforza and the Court of Urbino lecture
Embassy of Italy

In her richly illustrated lecture presentation, Battista Sforza and the Court of Urbino, Deborah R. Warin, Company Director, spoke to a sold out audience about the Renaissance princess whose image, immortalized by Piero Della Francesca, has become iconic while her fascinating  personal story  and significant political and cultural influence has been largely forgotten. In her lecture, Deborah helped her listeners sort through the evidence gathered in her scholarly research in preparation for a first English biography of this memorable woman, uncovering a pattern that helps us understand why so accomplished an individual could so quietly recede from history's spotlight.

From Our Cellar: The Gift of Good Taste

You will recall that last spring we sponsored a Sunday afternoon tasting of great Italian wines donated by our favorite wine purveyor, Cecile's Wine Cellar Of McLean.  Building on the success of that event, and as part of our celebration of Italian culture, each month we will highlight a very particular but perhaps less well-known Italian wine.    Cecile's will provide a bottle of  fine Italian wine, personally selected by Cecile's LogoCecile's owner Doug House, to be given to one of  our subscribers to Blog and News feed.  To be eligible, all you need to do is go to our web home page, and click any of the icons labeled "Receive Updates." (Reminder: You must actively join the subscriber list; receiving this email does not automatically make you eligible.) When you read about this month's wine selection, Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove 2007  we are sure you will want to add it to your cellar or table.

In addition, Doug  has agreed to extend a special discount to readers of this newsletter on the featured selection. If you mention The Renaissance Company when buying or ordering this special selection, you will receive additional discount beyond the sale price listed on Cecile's web site. This is a limited time offer and a perfect way to celebrate the holidays or to give a unique holiday gift . Be  sure to subscribe to our Blog and News update list to be eligible for the free prize and discover more about Ornellaia Le Serre.
