Girls Weeks 2010
The trees have already traded their radiant green for hints of gold and bronze; a sure sign that yet another summer at camp has come and gone. We have been singing our big God praises for five amazing weeks of girls' camp. We were blessed with 21 all-summer staff and lots of other staff to fill in on a weekly basis, ten C.I.L.T. graduates, and cabin after cabin of wonderful campers! Fun was had and truth was spoken. We were loud with laughter and song; but we also took time to be quiet and still as we learned more about listening to the voice of God and quieting our hearts before him.
As summer comes to an end and the school year is in full swing with its usual demands and fast paced days, don't forget the words of this year's theme verse found in Jeremiah 33:3:
"Call to me and I will answer you and show you great and hidden things that you have not known."
God is always ready and available to talk to us. When we take time to not only talk to him, but to quiet our hearts and listen to His voice, we are sure to learn more about His ways and His plans for us!
Peace, Love, and S'mores!!

Boys Week One - 20 10
It was another fabulous week for Boys' Week 1. Lots of laughs, activities, and learning. Six former BUILTS (Boys Under Intense Leadership Training) served on our staff this year. Fifteen campers participated in the BUILT program during Boys' Week 1. This speaks to the impact camp is having in the lives of kids. God's message of hope, forgiveness, and sacrifice is bearing fruit. Nothing brings me more joy than to know that past and present campers are living transformed lives - our BUILTs giving back by serving with us is one example.
James 3:1 says "But wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness." We are reaping a harvest of righteousness. What a privilege to watch God change lives!
"Keep on keeping on" campers and parents. Follow the narrow road that leads to life. Embrace the One who made you and knows how you run best. You will be blessed! ---Rob Scott
Boys' Week Two - 2010
Seventy-two boys attended Boys' Week Two this year. Camp was a lot of fun with great weather, fun activities and the boys growing in their faith and learning about our Lord and Savior.
During Boys' Week 2 we had the privilege of having several BUILTs who graduated in June return as staff. They served as counselors and activity staff. It was encouraging watching these guys, some of whom have been at camp for a number of years, grow in their leadership skills. While kids have fun at camp during the summer and have memories that will last a lifetime, our desire is that they not only have fun but grow in their faith and develop into the men that God desires them to be.
Not only did I see the relationships that staff members and I have with BUILT's, but with campers who have been coming for several years and even the campers who were there for the first time.
Our evening messages focused on hearing from God and then following God's voice. One evening we studied Stephen. Stephen was a man of God who was willing to follow God, and give his life for God. While it might have been easy for him to back down and denounce his faith in Christ, he chose to do what was right, contrary to the crowd, and followed Christ. We talked about peer pressure and the fact that the world will lead us away from Christ, but we as Christians need to stand firm and resist what the world tells us. This message was followed by devotions and further discussions back in the cabins about following Christ and not succumbing to peer pressure.
Being at camp is a blessing for me. I enjoy sharing Christ with the campers, sharing teaching strategies with the activity staff, watching the campers learn new skills, fellowshipping with the staff and personally to be able to have a week completely focused on Christ in everything we do with fellow believers.
As an elementary school principal, what a privilege it is for me to have a week sharing Christ with others, waking up and joining others in Bible study and prayer, and enjoying the gift of Camp Cherith. I feel renewed in my walk with the Lord and my prayer for myself, the campers and the staff is that we would all leave our week of camp renewed with a passionate desire to have Christ in every phase of life.

Camp Cherith - Happy Campers (let's keep 'em coming!)
According to a survey conducted by the Journal of Family Issues parents perceive significant gains for their children who have experienced residential camping. They see their children become more:
Adventurous - they try or learn something new
Independent
Make friends easier
Have a more positive identity
Develop leadership skills.
At Camp Cherith our campers do all that while being introduced to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and learning how to apply Christian principles to daily living.
That is why we as an organization are passionate about getting kids to camp.
There is a difference between our camp fees and what it actually costs to have a child at camp for a week. Each year, people like you, donate money to Camp Cherith to assist with our operational costs and allow us to offer an excellent camp program at a reasonable cost.
The time to give is now. Here's what your dollars do for Camp Cherith:
$3,000 provides all programming materials for one week of camp
$1,500 provides one month of administrative expenses
$750 provides one month of utility expenses
$500 provides food for one day at camp
$100 provides gas for one day of water activities on Lake Six
$50 provides craft or woodworking materials for five campers
Soon many of you will be receiving a letter, regarding our Annual Fund, with information on how you can help us continue providing the camp experience that is so beneficial to our youth. We pray that you will consider the opportunities and growth Camp Cherith provides its campers and donate to Camp Cherith part of what the Lord has provided you. |

Water Rising
Isaiah 42:3 says, "when you pass through the waters, I will be with you." If you've been up to camp the in August or September, or you may have heard from your camper - you now have to "pass through" waters to reach our flag pole and the tack house while the canoe landing, volleyball court, tetherball, and 2 fire rings are under water. Schrams Lake has risen significantly due to heavy rainfall this year and saturated grounds. We now also have a defined island on the lake.
While the staff was very creative in adapting all the 2010 camp programming to the new terrain, we ask for your prayers on possible solutions or adaptations to this issue. A recent Star Tribune article noted the concern for spring flooding in the NW part of Minnesota due to the already saturated ground this fall that will be unable to accommodate normal snowmelt.

Cherith Connections--
Scott Gilles, age 59, our beloved woodsman, died suddenly of a massive heart attack on May 8, 2010. His fingerprints are everywhere at camp as he cleared the woods of unsafe trees, created wonderful fire rings and replaced sitting logs at the chapel. He created the most awesome bonfires, kept the fishing poles working, and helped clean the rifles. Scott even directed Boys week in 1991. At Camp Cherith this summer we missed Scott so much as we recalled all the wonderful memories he gave us and things he built around us that we will enjoy for many years to come. Three trees were lovingly planted in front of the TB building in memory of Scott.
Amy "Pookster" Rish (Staff '01-08) finished her degree in law enforcement while in Ohio after 19 straight months of school!
Kaia "Tantor" Blegen (Staff/Cilt 2004) and Sam "MoCrow" Mosher (Staff 2008) met at Camp Cherith and tied the knot on April 24,2010. They now live in Omaha, Nebraska. |
Mother/Daughter Weekend 2010
"Spending time with my daughter (or mom)" was the #1 "best thing about 2010 Mother/Daughter weekend". Everyone enjoyed time spent together away from the hustle and bustle of the normal family life that gave mothers and daughters time to communicate and play together during the gorgeous Fall weekend. In addition to basic activities like archery and riflery, many enjoyed a hike around the perimeter of camp or fun crafts like a folding photo albums or "memory stones" made out of concrete. A simple highlight for a young camper was "finding leevs for prajet". Join us next Fall! |
First Father/Son Weekend
The first ever Camp Cherith Father/Son weekend was a roaring success! It was an intimate gathering with just over 30 fathers, sons and grandpas, several of whom had never been to camp before. The weekend started out cold and wet, but ended up beautiful, as the fall colors in the area were at their peak. We enjoyed a weekend filled with warm fellowship, some great teaching (courtesy of Jimbo), fun activities (Woody's wood shop, archery, riflery, fishing, etc.), boys'-style worship and, of course, great food. It's always fun to be at camp in the "off-season", and to enjoy a different pace. Kyle (J-hawk) Engen, a veteran of Boys' Week 1, marveled at how peaceful camp can be! Whether it was running around a very soggy Back 40 playing big base, enjoying a cookout in Pathfinderland, listening to Jimbo's message on a beautiful Sunday morning in the Chapel, or just enjoying the fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa, everyone there had the same sentiments: "See you again next year!"
