Girls Weeks 2010
I am writing this entry for the Chatter from Mombasa, Kenya. I have been in Africa for almost 3 weeks, and am currently helping with a conference here for missionaries who are stationed in countries where the gospel of Christ cannot be proclaimed freely. It has been a humbling experience to serve and worship with these men, women, and children. These families sacrifice daily to live out what God has called them to do. A majority of these families have not worshiped in a group setting in over 2 years. When they meet together, they often have to post someone at their door to make sure they are not being watched. Another reminder that we take so much for granted in America.
As I turn my thoughts to the summer, I have been thinking about how blessed we are to have a beautiful camp where we can come and worship the Lord together freely. Where we can read the Word together. Where we can pray for one another. All things that in many countries have to be done with caution.
The other very humbling thing I have observed spending time with these missionaries, is that more than once they have referred to Christians living in America, as the "state-side team". I have reflected on this statement a lot. I've wondered how many Christians view themselves as missionaries in America? Are we concerned and aware that we have opportunities every day, whether at school, in our neighborhoods, or at our place of work, to advance the kingdom of God? I want to challenge myself and each of you, to keep a tender, open heart before God. Let Him lead and guide you daily. Don't miss out on opportunities to share the love of Christ.
I hope to see many of you at Cherith this summer. I also would like to encourage you to pray and ask God if there is anyone who doesn't know Christ that you could invite and/or send to Camp Cherith. Sending a child to Camp Cherith is another way we can be a light and partner with our Creator to advance His kingdom!
Anticipating many wonderful times of worship together this summer, Sarah Ann (Mooch)

Boys' Weeks 2010
Summer of 2010 will be here before we know it and we are looking forward to two fun-filled weeks for boys at Camp Cherith.
The theme for this year is "Can you hear me now?" In the world that we live in there is a lot of pressure to listen to celebrities, politicians, educators and all of the media that we have available to us. While some may deliver truth, we need to be able to discern and know truth. This year the boys will be focusing on hearing God and living our lives according to what God is telling us. Knowing His unchanging Word is essential because God will never tell us to do something that goes against truth that He has declared in His Word. Camp is a great time to put aside the things of this world and focus on Christ and His truth so that we are prepared to be in the world, but not of it, so that we can glorify God with our lives. The theme for this year is "Can you hear me now?" For staff, we know that you will be blessed by working with the campers, sharing His love with the campers and also the time of fellowship and reading God's Word with the staff. We encourage you to consider being a part of one or both Camp Cherith Boys' Weeks 2010.
Blessings, Scott Taylor(Week 2) and Rob Scott(Week 1)

34 Years of Service to
North Central Camp Cherith
North Central Camp Cherith announces the resignation of Becky (Olson) Nelson, BO. Her dedication to Cherith and its mission of serving campers and staff will be greatly missed.
She was a camper for five years, first experiencing Cherith at the old site at Head of the Rapids. She fell totally in love with Cherith in 1972 when she attended the new site in Frazee. The wonderful staff, the rustic simplicity of the camp, and the beautiful nature created by God called it to be her place of growth and service for the next 34 years.
She is a 1975 CILT (Camper in Leadership Training) and has been on summer staff ever since. During those years she has held almost every job at camp, her favorite being Waterfront Director during the late 70's with Lisa Edstrom. She spent four years as the Girls Director, many weeks as the Nurse, and most recently has served as the Site Manager. She has also slept in almost every building at camp, including the old shower house, tiki torch hut, and many trailers. She is most thankful for the new staff housing that has recently been added to the site. Besides all her work during the summer she dedicated 17 years as the Executive Director, being responsible for ensuring the organization operated according to all camping standards and government regulations, while supporting the directors and board through a home office. She was also active on the Summer Operations team which helps plan camp throughout the year and was Board President for three years.
Her favorite memory of camp is becoming engaged to her husband, Doug Nelson in 1995, at the Cross fire ring area (now under water near the Chapel). They have a daughter, Emily age 10. The entire family has dedicated their summers to opening, closing, and running camp. With Becky's resignation they intend to spend some time traveling during the summer months and coming back to volunteer at camp as a lifeguard, nurse, or even help out in maintenance some weeks.
The Board of Directors wishes the Nelson family rich blessings for their service to His Glory at North Central Camp Cherith.

Cherith Connections
Paul Olson (Wren)
1928-2009
If you went fishing on the pontoon during boys week, you probably went with "Wren", Paul Olson. If you ever drove into camp on registration day and Paul was there, you were probably greeted by him and heard him share a joke with you. Longtime friend and supporter of North Central Camp Cherith, Paul Olson passed away on Dec. 3, 2009 from his battle with cancer. He will be missed by wife Carole "Jay", daughters Becky Nelson "BO" Executive Director, Cilt 1975, Beth Beebe Cilt 1977, and Paula Vander Schaaf "Pipit" along with their families who have all had a part at Camp Cherith.
Paul's desire was to have his memorials be sent to Camp Cherith for staff housing with a "double bed" for couples. "Wren's Nest" will be a reality soon....thanks to a huge number of people giving to his wishes!
Marilyn Klefsaas, mom of Kim "Sputzy" Westra Cilt'77, director '88-92, Krista Ottoson, Cilt '80, Karin Schulz Cilt '86, and Kermit Klefsaas Staff '07-'08, passed away on February 22, 2010 only days after being diagnosed with cancer. Husband Kerm and Marilyn have always supported NCCC both physically and prayerfully and Marilyn will be missed greatly by all.
Amy "Ammers" and Todd Mattson welcomed 8 month old Mikayla Vernese into their home on Feb. 9th through an adoption from Haiti. |
