Twelve-year-old Rachel Blair Friedman from Portland, Maine, was honored as the recipient of the AFP Northern New England Chapter's AFP-NNE Demont Scholarship for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy during the chapter's National Philanthropy DayŽ celebration held in late 2009 in Burlington,Vt.

Rachel received the award for her work raising funds to benefit the American Cancer Society, among other cancer-related causes. Rachel, who will receive a $10,000 college scholarship, was motivated to raise funds for cancer care when her mother was diagnosed with lymphoma. She started an event called Perform for A Cure, which has been held annually for more than three years and has raised more than $30,000 to date.

The AFP Northern New England Chapter partnered with Demont Associates and video producer Dan Osgood to create an eight-minute video about Rachel that was shown at the awards ceremony. The video came as a complete surprise to Rachel, who called it "the best gift I ever got!"
