Young Philanthropist Receives $10,000 AFP-Demont Scholarship!
  Bob Demont and Rachel Friedman
"Rachel displays the qualities that good fundraisers have: imagination, commitment, perseverance, and humility. We hope to encourage other kids to pursue their dreams and to make a lasting difference for good, as Rachel has." - Bob Demont, President

Twelve-year-old Rachel Blair Friedman of Portland, Maine was honored as the recipient of the AFP Northern New England-Demont Scholarship for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy in Burlington, Vermont during the chapter's National Philanthropy Day celebrations in late 2009.

The AFP-Northern New England chapter partnered with Demont Associates and video producer Dan Osgood to create an eight-minute video about Rachel featured at the awards ceremony. The video came as a complete surprise to Rachel, who called it the "best gift I ever got!" Click here to view a clip from Rachel's video.

Rachel received the award for her work raising funds to benefit the American Cancer Society and the Cancer Community Center (Portland, ME).  Rachel, currently a middle school student at the Lyman Moore Middle School, will receive a $10,000 college scholarship for her award. Rachel's mother was diagnosed with lymphoma when Rachel was three years old. In 2006, at the age of 9, Rachel started an event called Perform For A Cure which has been held annually for more than three years and has raised more than $30,000 to date. She was nominated by Kathy Damon of Breakwater School in Portland, who called her show a "model of positive action for the students and the adults in our community."

Nominations for the 2010 AFPNNE-Demont Scholarship for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy are available on the Demont Associates website.

The Vermont Country Store (Manchester Center) as Outstanding Corporation
