When I first started quilting, I couldn't figure out why experienced quilters would spend money on expensive irons. "An iron is an iron," or so I thought. Now that I'm quilting with more confidence and I'm developing a sense of what attributes make for a great iron, and what problems await with a difficult iron. I'd like to review three irons I've recently used and/or purchased. In my pre-quilting day my favorite iron for clothing was a Black and Decker "Light 'n Easy" iron. It did a great job on clothing. It was not heavy and had a non-stick plate which seemed to glide across the fabrics I wore; denims, t-shirts, blouses, skirts, etc. However, I noticed right-away when I started quilting that it was not great for piecing; the tip was too round to get right into corners of seams for proper quilt pressing. So, I purchased another Black and Decker product, a "Steam Advantage" iron at Wal-Mart for $25.99. This is a non-stick iron with a plate that got sticky over time. It was great on the steam front. The tip of the Steam Advantage was sharp - more "pointy" than my original iron, which helped in pressing down seams. But with time the plate got sticky and dragged over cotton fabrics. I cleaned the plate, but the non-stick surface became rough with use. Finally, the Steam Advantage failed to work and I had the opportunity to purchase a new iron. In considering a new iron, I remembered an expensive Rowenta iron I used at my quilt teacher's studio, a Rowenta "Advancer." It had the smoothest plate, micro-holes all over the bottom, and it seemed to float over the toughest seams. At $120.00 It was priced out of my range, so I decided to try a lower-end Rowenta "Auto-Steam," for just $49.99 at Target. I love this iron. Its plate and edges are smooth and silky. It also floats over seams without drag or pull. The water reservoir holds enough water for me to quilt for hours without refill. The weight of the Auto-Steam also seems to be just right: not too light and not too heavy. The tip also seems to be just right as well, allowing me to press into corners with ease. The price was reasonable and now I'm just crossing my fingers that it will last. Time will tell, but so far, I'm very happy with this iron. On the "sexy" side of high-tech irons, I was sewing with Stacie several weeks ago, and used her Oliso Steam Iron with "Auto-Lift." The iron automatically lifts up away from your fabric and ironing surface. Touch the handle again, and the "Auto-Lift" features gives way and lowers the iron back down to the surface. Amazing! It saves your arm from all the lifting of regular irons. You simply touch, iron, and let go. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to try such a smart iron. Stacie's Oliso iron was purchased at Candlelite Quilts in Chelmsford, Ma. If you do a lot of ironing, you might want to consider this workhorse. So far, I'm happy with the Rowenta Auto-Steam, and I'm glad I made the investment into a good quilting iron. However, I do dream about the Osilo! Thanks for reading my humble opinion!
