This month I'd like to spend some time to review proper preparation of your quilt backs. Here are some step by step instructions to help square and press your quilt backs. Remember that technique makes for a beautifully- finished quilt!
1). First and Foremost - It is better to have more fabric, than not enough! In order to load your quilt, I require 4"'s all around. Always purchase a little extra to allow for squaring in addition to the required 4"'s!
2). Second and as Important - Press your fabric! Press your fabric! Front, back and all seams! Oh, and did I mention to press your fabric! Well, that being said, we'll move on.
2). Piecing Your Back - There are several ways to piece your back. One way is not better than the other. Whether you seam your backing in two panels, or three it is fine, it's a matter of personal choice. Personally, I don't like a seam down the middle so I use three panels. This method does require more sewing, but I feel it produces a better look.
3) Seam Allowance - When you piece your quilt back proper seaming is key. Once you have cut your fabric length into two or three panels, you should first start with the salvage edges matching the pattern or direction. Using a 1" seam allowance sew the length of your back making sure the salvage does not show in your seam. (Check this again, nothing worse than a quilt with a white salvage line down the middle!) Now trim the salvage off to eliminate bulk and press your seams open.
2). Folding to Square - I usually lay the quilt back length over my machine bar which makes this next step easier. If you have a banister or railing, you can lay the length over the railing until it hangs smoothly. If you don't have a railing, hold the back along the length until it hangs smoothly (the edges will not match up). Now fold the short ends together and lay it out on your cutting mat smoothing outward from the folded corner. Now you are ready to trim and square it.
3). Trimming - Line the folded edges of the quilt back on your cutting mat so that one folded edge is along the bottom of your cutting mat and the other is along the left side of your cutting mat. Now trim the right and top open edges and Voila! Your backing is squared.
4) Finally - Press your quilt back, and fold it neatly! Remember I am only a phone call away if you need some help.
I hop you find this helpful and I look forward to seeing some of my words at work! Please E-mail me with any suggestions, tips or hot topics you would like to share.
