FOCUS Job Fair

FOCUS Community Development Corporation is hosting a Student Job Fair on Wednesday February 22, 2012 at The Gibson Centre 63 Tupper Street West, Alliston from 3:30pm-5:30pm. We are looking for employers to attend that are currently hiring students or will be hiring students for the summer. We will be advertising the Job Fair in several newspapers, flyers, twitter, facebook, schools etc. We are expecting a good turn out for the event. Last year we had 365 students attend.

This event gives employers an opportunity to:

  • Promote their organization to future employees
  • Meet their recruiting needs
  • Provide career information
  • Reduce their time, effort and recruitment costs by meeting candidates face to face on the same day in one location
  • Organizations must have opportunities available within five months of attending the Job Fair

This is at no cost to you, please let me know if you are interested in participating in this community event. Please complete the attached registration form or email to Lisa Griffin lisag@focuscdc.on.ca.

Canadian Chamber of Commerce
We (the CCC) released our Economic Outlook for 2012. In our report, we observe that while many of Canada's economic advantages remain intact, ample headwinds will constrain growth in the year ahead. Fortunately, business investment remains a bright spot in both 2012 and 2013.

This is the latest instalment in the Economic Policy Series by Tina Kremmidas, Chief Economist of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Today, more than ever, what happens in China represents both a challenge and an opportunity for Canadian businesses. Today, we issued a report that argues that Canada-China ties are quickly becoming one of Canada's most important external relationships. In our report entitled, Advancing Our Economic Ties With China: Three priorities for Canadian business, we present three elements to making Canada's relationship with China more profitable: implementing a strategy of political engagement with China; removing barriers and irritants to more trade and better trade with China; and, improving the investment relationship with China.
We invite you to read our report and accompanying news release.

Emergency Preparedness Resources for the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation

On January 1, 2012, two requirements under the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR) dealing with emergency preparedness came into effect. Under the first, organizations that prepare emergency procedures, plans or public safety information and make it available to the public must provide that information in an accessible format or with appropriate communications supports, upon request. The other requirement deals with emergency preparedness for employees. If organizations have employees with disabilities, they must now provide them with individualized emergency response information, if necessary.

We are pleased to announce the release of our newest resources to help organizations meet these requirements. Providing emergency response information for employees with disabilities and Accessibility Standard for Information and Communication: Providing emergency and public safety information for people with disabilities. These booklets outline suggested steps that organizations can take to prepare these plans, as well as tips on how to support employees with disabilities who may need help during an emergency. We would also like to let you know that our online reporting tool for the Accessibility Standard for Customer Service is now available for private and non-profit sector organizations to file their reports.

To find out more about tools and resources to help organizations comply and where to file a report, please visit ontario.ca/accessON. You can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Simcoe County Food & Agriculture Charter Visioning Day

Do you care about the future of our food? About farmland and farmers? The impact of poor food choices on our health? Food related issues like hunger? If so, we want to hear from you! The County of Simcoe is working closely with a growing list of community partners in creating a Simcoe County Food and Agriculture Charter and is hosting a visioning day on February 21st to find out what matters most to you when it comes to food and the local food system. The visioning day will be held at Lakehead University in Orillia from 8:30 to 4:00 p.m. The registration fee is $25.00 which includes locally sourced lunch and refreshments. Please note space is limited. To further inform our work, we are asking all residents of the County of Simcoe, and the cities of Barrie and Orillia who care about food matters to complete a short survey and let us know what you think is important when it comes to food and agriculture matters. It should only take about 10 minutes of your time and your answers will be kept confidential. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/simcoecountyfoodagriculturecharter

The information from the surveys and the visioning day will help lay the foundation for the first draft of the Simcoe County Food and Agriculture Charter. To get an agenda for the day and a registration form or just to learn more about this exciting initiative visit www.fpa.simcoe.ca
