THE UNREGULATED COMMODITY
Propane is a fuel we depend on to heat our homes, cook our food and run some of our vehicles. Yet no regulation exists to assure propane's quality. Remember - there are two kinds of propane: HD5 propane, which is 90% chemical propane 100% of the time, which comes from natural gas processing and travels to you from Texas through the Texas Eastern Pipeline, which has to make sure that all the shippers on its line get the same product all the time by Federal Regulation, and "commercial grade" propane, which comes from oil refining and is "odds and ends" of the oil refining process. These "odds and ends" are called "slop" by chemical engineers. This slop, sold as "commercial grade" propane because it can hold a flame, often has little chemical propane, and can have none.
