THRIFTY PROPANE KEEPS UP THE FIGHT
Last week we reported that Thrifty was successful in its dispute with the pipeline supplying HD5 propane to this area, and would be moving toward a hearing on the merits. This week, we are a step closer to a resolution, when a hearing was scheduled for early next month before a FERC Administrative Law Judge. We will report on any news coming out the hearing as soon as we have word. Meanwhile, a lawyer that works with us submitted testimony to the Senate Energy Committee, urging that more efforts be made to get truth about HD5 out to the public. He will be meeting with Senatorial staff next month on the issue, as well as other critical energy issues, including the role that the government might play in stabilizing propane prices simply by improved supply reporting and establishment of a strategic propane reserve to keep American resources here, in America. We believe that small steps, that will not cost any tax dollars, can keep and create jobs here, in America, while making our products more competitive world-wide. We'll be discussing these steps in future newsletters. Tell your friends about Thrifty and its fight for the Truth about HD5, so we keep up the fight for you! |

BP DISASTER UPDATE: AROUND THE COAST
The BP disaster continues to generate news this week, both good and bad. Some good news about people and sea turtles in Florida, and some not so good news: Louisiana continues its struggle to clean up its wetlands and waterways at the Mississippi Delta, and grim tidings from Alabama. Meanwhile, PetroVietnam closes in on another BP oil field as BP sheds property to raise funds for its liability fund. The good news: thousands of rescued sea turtles, held inland out of harm's way since June, have been returned to the Gulf, now that it is safe enough for them to cruise the water without getting covered in oil. Hundreds of Floridians joined to rescue the turtles, and the turtles returned the favor by staying in good health and returning home this week. The not so good news: Louisiana's wetlands and waterways remain in tenuous shape, as oil and tar balls continue to be skimmed out of the complex system of grasses, trees and waterways; while in Alabama, a full 32% of its Gulf Coast residents would pick up and move if they could. The disaster continues to resonate around the world, as this week Viet Nam's state oil company is poised to buy some more of BP's oil fields in the wake of its recent asset sale to TNK-BP, its Russian partnership.
The lessons of BP remain simple: it is better to grumble about the cost of safety than to pay billions to catch-up after cut corners. As the story continues, let us all take this lesson seriously. |
