SHALE GAS AND THE MARCELLUS FORMATION While the world was watching the BP disaster off-shore, the story of Marcellus Formation shale gas in New York and Pennsylvania was unfolding that has big, long-term, consequences for everyone that depends on fossil fuels for heating, cooking and electricity. The Marcellus Formation is layer of shale that stretches deep underground from Western New York through Pennsylvania, to Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. Its existence has long been known, but has only recently become a focus for gas exploration because first, the growing urgency of developing new sources of energy within the United States and, second, the sophistication of "hydro-fracing" as drilling technique in smaller gas-bearing formations in the Southwest. The demand for fuels that leave a smaller carbon footprint, such as natural gas, has also driven the exploration for shale gas. First advocated by small operators hoping to strike it rich in an untapped field with new technology, this latest energy boom now involves the biggest players in the energy industry who are paying a premium for the most promising natural gas leases. This is the first in a series of articles that will explore the potential of this recent development, the interests that are competing as this new source of fuel is developed and the efforts of state governments in Pennsylvania and New York to balance the interests for the public good. We hope this series will help you be better informed about the future of fuel in the United States and the issues at stake as our society, so dependant on fossil fuels, reaches deeper beneath the surface of the earth, in areas where people have already established communities independent of the energy industry. We believe that this is an important story, not only because it may have an immediate impact on the price of your home heat in the future, but also because it reflects the issues facing everyone with growing urgency around the world.

BP OIL SPILL UPDATE - ITS LASTING IMPACT We are told that the story of the Deepwater Horizon is all but over, as we are days away from completing a "bottom-kill" of the well. However, the lasting story of the well, of who was really hurt by this disaster, and who was really responsible, is far from over. The first large compensation pay-outs have just been made, to the Florida Realtors for lost profits, federal hearings about the disaster and the response are continuing, and continuing contentiously. The big story, though, the story of the dispersant "Coexit," is just beginning to unfold, both as to its toxicity, it has been called the "Agent Orange" of the Gulf of Mexico, and how it was used to mask the scale of the disaster. This story shows the power of Big Oil and Big Oil's concerns. Another big story is the insurance story, which is unfolding in the British financial press: the disaster will prove to be an insurance bonanza as regulators demand more insurance from drillers and marine insurance premiums skyrocket. Meanwhile, Hollywood has jumped in to reduce this to a cops-and-robbers drama. All of these stories add up to one story: the era of easy energy choices is over and days of tough energy choices has begun. With that in mind, we have initiated a series on the Marcellus Formation with in this issue. We will continue to follow the BP story, as we work to keep you up to date on the news that matters most - your home, your family and keeping both warm.
