Refineries, The Banks and You
The major propane marketers purchase the fuel product they sell to their customers, marketed as propane, as cheaply as possible. They are able to purchase this fuel cheaply from the Northern refineries that must get rid of their byproduct mixture that is called "commercial grade propane" because they have no place to store it for future processing. The refineries can either flare this byproduct mixture off into the air, or sell it to the major marketers at a deep discount. Because the refineries have, over the years allowed themselves to become captive to their own financing arrangements, they cannot afford to invest in the improvements required to process the byproduct mixture so that it is useful, valuable and safe. Instead, they must chase each dollar and each cost-savings to pay on their loans from the money-center banks. As a result, the refineries' byproduct mixture sold to the major propane marketers contains cancer-causing olefins, which should be separated from the propane, for use in plastics.
The resulting product is taken directly from the refineries by the propane distributors. They enthusiastically sell this olefin-laced byproduct, because of its cost-savings, to you for your cooking and for your home heat. The refineries, captive to the money-center banks that finance even the paint on their pipes, have given up their decision-making as their enterprise value is replaced with loans. "Flare-off," of what used to be waste-product, has now been captured and re-captured for sale as fuel for home heat and home cooking, including as fuel for backyard grilling. The fuel sold for backyard grilling is sold in small tanks to over 60 million households, poisoning each and every one with olefins, which act like ball-bearings let loose in human tissue.
The quip of French royalty "let them eat cake" is echoed by the oil refiners, the banks that control them and the major propane distributors with "let them eat olefins." The refiners trust that the major publicly-traded propane marketers will compensate for constantly lowering quality of the olefin-laced byproduct they supply to spike this mixture when needed with enough HD5 propane to raise its chemical profile so that it holds a flame. |
