Greetings!

I signed up for Twitter and already have about ten followers. Never mind that I haven't sent a single Tweet yet. I'm still trying to figure the site out. I have a Facebook page, too, but the amazing college girl who works for me set it up and manages it for me. She's tried to show me several times how to use it, but no sooner does she show me than I promptly forget.I also have a Linked In page. I periodically get an invitation from someone to link up with them, and I accept it. Other than that, I rarely check it. I'm TRYING to get on board with this social media thing, I swear. But I can't see past the long news streams. And they are listed in reverse order, so I always feel like I'm reading posts backwards. Sometimes I send a reply, but then wonder if I sent it correctly. I'm not a computer person, in case you haven't figured that out. And, frankly, I miss talking on the phone to friends. I miss hearing their voices. I miss laughing together. I miss chitchatting about nothing important or getting into deep discussions about things that really matter. Discussions that take place in more than 140 characters. If I type How are you? and someone types back, I'm fine, how do I know she means it? On the phone or in person, I can hear a hesitation, can see a look cross her face, and I know she isn't really fine. But what can you do? That's progress. Or is it?

Did You Know: Hundreds of millions of regular letters and V-Mail were sent to soldiers during WWII. Just as many were written by the soldiers and sent home. People rushed to their mailboxes every day hoping for news from their loved ones. Okay, maybe it's a a lot quicker to send a text, but I do miss letters.

Did You Know: According to Today Show contributor, Dr. Ruth Peters, 56% of students want to be involved in some sort of summer program that helps prevent learning loss. We sell our kids short when we assume they just want to hang out during the break. Keep the kids in your life learning and moving this summer!

Did You Know:  My new-and-improved resources page on my website contains links to resources for writers and those looking to get published, as well as for teachers and fans interested in WWII history. I also have a new page for teen writers, and we are working on a "nonprofits" page featuring any agenies I'm partnering with or speaking to. These are very difficult times for anyone who relies on donations, so this will be a great clearinghouse for those looking for national or Colorado organizations to partner with or support.

That Book Inside You!

My Most Popular Workshop:

Saturday, June 11 or Aug. 6

It all starts with an idea--a middle-of-the-night brainstorm or a concept that's been building--and you know you've got a book inside you. But how do you begin? Click here for more information on this popular, one-day workshop and to sign up.

Teresa's Quote of the Month:

"Write What Excites You"

Forget writing to the trends. By the time you write that zombie book, the reading public will have moved on to werewolves. Forget writing for the market. So what if there are hundreds of weight-loss books already, if there's something unique about your approach, write it anyway.  Forget the naysayers. Whether it's an agent, an editor or your spouse, ignore those people who tell you your idea will never fly.Click here for more.

Social Media for Writers:

I've been asked by several people to state my opinion on social media. As you can see from my post above, I'm intrigued by it, and I know its influence is growing, but the jury is still out on just how effective it really is for MOST writers. Sure, some will hit it big using social media. Just as some used to hit it big by getting lots of radio interviews or numerous newspaper reviews, etc. But most writers will see only moderate results for their efforts. Does that mean you should not do it? Of course not. If you enjoy doing it and if you've seen that it works for you, keep at it. But here is an interesting post that was forwarded on to me by a friend from M.J. Rose's blog. M.J. is a marketing guru. click here to read her take on the subject .

 Send Me Your Writing Questions:

And I'll do my best to answer them in this column. Your questions can be on the craft of writing or the business of publishing or the challenges of marketing or anything in between. I'm eager to hear your questions!

New this Fall:

My education director and I will be working hard this summer to bring new products and services to teachers. Watch for new curriculum that meets Colorado Standards and a new School Visit program that will benefit your whole school. We'll be sending information to teachers at the beginning of August. We hope to work with you next fall!!

Summer is the perfect time to read through my Home-Front Heroes books and consider them for your classroom or to check out my website and sign up to receive a free Do Your Part School Kit. While you prepare for the next school year, enjoy this time-honored summer tradition:

Old Fashioned Lemonade:

 6 lemons

6 cups of really cold water

 1 cup of sugar

Squeeze the lemons to make 1 cup of lemon juice.

Use a gallon size pitcher and combine all 3 ingredients.

Stir the lemonade well. Refrigerate until chilled.

Tip:  Save a few lemon slices to garnish your drink for decoration!

Students:

Do Your Part!

During World War II, the kids of our country helped out wherever they could, doing whatever they could. Can you think of five things you could do this summer to help your family and neighborhood? Make a list and check it off!

Fun Activity: Interview an adult in your life about the things he or she did as a child during the summer. Ask that person what he or she did to help the community.

As you read through the Home-Front Heroes books, think about all the things the characters did to "do their part!"

Pass it On!
Every month we work hard to include as much helpful information as we can for teachers, parents, homeschoolers, and students. If you like the activities you see here, please pass this newsletter on! To see our archived activities Click Here.
