I'm moving!
Into Phase Two of Teresa Funke & Company. We're celebrating our one-year anniversary on September 1 and are gearing up to launch new programs and workshops this fall and a new book in 2011. I'll be doing more traveling to take my show, school visits, and workshops on the road, so look for me in your area. I am also pleased to welcome Cary Rentola, my new Director of Public Relations and Sales, to my team.

I have also just left the beautiful Old Town office that I shared with two friends and moved into a new office suite on the south side of town. Come and see me at 116 W. Harvard St, Suite 1 in Fort Collins.

Did You Know:
It's harvest time for many farmers. I discovered that the United Nations created the Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945 to combat hunger around the world. Click here to see the FAO website.

Did You Know: The National School Lunch Act was also passed in 1945, as part of Roosevelt's New Deal WPA commitment to feeding America's hungry children.

Did You Know: There's an organization that helps provide new underwear to kids as they head back to school. Ray Martinez led a local drive for this because he knows item like these can contribute to a kid's sense of dignity. Check it out at www.underwearness.org

Doing My Part book cover

Anticipating the upcoming Labor Day holiday, my program's director, Marilee, and I were commenting on the contributions children have made in the workplace over the centuries. Whether it was helping on the family farm or working in factories in the industrial age or serving burgers at McDonalds, kids have done it. Doing My Part takes a look at how one girl helped the war effort and her family by working in a war factory during WWII. Click here for more info on Doing My Part.

Fort Collins Reads:
Has chosen the book The Art of Racing in the Rain as their 2010 selection. Click here for the Fort Collins Reads website. The whole city is invited to read the book and attend discussions and talks about the book.I love these city-wide programs and, like most authors, fantasize about one of my books getting chosen someday. If your town has not started a city-wide reading program, here's a great article telling you how to set one up in your area.

Homeschoolers:
Thank you to those of you responded to the ad in the Old Schoolhouse Magazine and ordered my Home-Front Heroes Homeschool Kit.

The kits contain lesson plans and student activities for each book in the series. We are planning to add to our homeschool curriculum soon, with engaging materials that link lessons from the past to life in the present.

Student Activity:
Toys in the 1940s & 2010:
Although rationing was in full swing, toys we know today were being created! Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders were specially designed for children in the 1940s to play and enjoy.
People at this time were seeking simple, inexpensive fun.

As many great inventions are created by accident, General Electric had this happen as well. An engineer for GE was attempting to create synthetic rubber, but ended up with a strange substance that could bounce and stretch... and that is how the invention of Silly Putty came to be!

WWII Pancakes:
Click here for a recipe from the 1940's. Although rationing only allowed 1 egg per week, this pancake batter made enough food for a whole family.

Mind Bender:
Keep a look out each month for a mind bender. It could be some sort of activity or a trivia question. Check out the next month's newsletter for the answer. Good luck and have fun!!

Answer to Last Month's Mind Bender:

Educators:
Labor Day is a Unique Holiday:
Because it is not devoted to any one person, sect, race or nation.

Labor Day became an official national holiday in 1894 and is celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a day dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. This holiday honors the working class contributions to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. It is called the "workingmen's holiday."

Classroom Activity Suggestion:
Teachers, have fun with Labor Day by discussing this information and researching "Community Helpers." As a group, create a long list of the different jobs and volunteers that help in your community (police, nurses, doctors, teachers, Red Cross workers). Get into the holiday by assigning each child one of these specific jobs. Have them find a way to dress up to represent this role and have a parade!

 Pass It On:
Every month we work hard to include as much helpful information as we can for teachers, parents, homeschoolers, and students. If you like the activities you see here, please pass this newsletter on! To see our archived activities, click here.
