Welcome to my new newsletter! People tell me all the time, "You have the most interesting job," and I agree. As a writer and speaker I get to meet fascinating people every day and I'm always learning something new. So in this newsletter, you'll not only find information about my books, programs and events, you'll also find writing and teacher tips, student activities and so much more. And I'll share with you the most fascinating things I've learned each month. For example:

DID YOU KNOW:the WASPs (Women Air Force Service Pilots) were finally recognized by our government just last month for their service during World War II? Read more about them here

DID YOU KNOW:18% of Americans do not have a high school diploma? Astounding! But this past week, I spoke to some motivated individuals who are turning their lives around by studying for their GED tests.

DID YOU KNOW:: The Marine battalion we collected school supplies for has also helped distribute medical supplies, eyeglasses, toys and even cookies to the Afghan civilians in their area. All supplies were provided by individuals like you and me.

Writer Tip:
Summer Writer's Conferences

 .
If you're in the mood to travel this summer, why not plan a trip around one of these summer writing conferences? All of them are held in vacation destinations and are surrounded by some of the most inspiring landscapes in America Summer conferences also tend to attract dedicated teachers who come back every year. We all have seasons when we are most productive as writers. If you're a teacher or a busy parent, for example, it's difficult to take writing classes during the school year. Summer may just be the best time to focus on learning your craft.

How to Bring Memorial Day into the Classroom

Most students think that Memorial Day is just another day off of school, and don't know it was originally called Decoration Day, and that it is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Here are some ways that you can introduce them to the true meaning of the holiday, and provide them with a glimpse into the lives of the men and women it honors. Thanks to Education World

Hey Homeschoolers!

Student Activity:
A Popular Game from 1940's; Kick the Can.

Kick the Can is the urban cousin of hide and seek.

Number of participants: Three or more players Length of time: Fifteen to 30 minutes, or until dinner's ready

What players will need: Plenty of places to hide and a flat place to leave the can, a play area where nothing (like a window) can be damaged by a flying can

Rules of the game:
Start by choosing one person to be It. To start the game, this player gets to kick the can as far as he's able. The players scatter to find hiding places as the can rolls. It then chases after the can and brings it back to home base. Once he brings the can home....

My April 'Dancing" performances were a big hit! I very nearly sold out the second show. Thank you to everyone who donated school supplies to rebuild Garmsir Elementary school in Garmsir Afghanistan. We collected five boxes of supplies to send to the Marine battalion to hand out to Afghan families.
