Pastoral Staff Training & Development

As many of you know, Rick and Nancy Forbus have recently re-joined our church. Rick served on our church staff for many years and is now an Executive Advisor and Coach in the private sector. He has graciously volunteered to lead our Pastoral Staff through some of the assessments, trainings, and leadership development courses that his company uses for business executives all over the world. We appreciate Rick donating his time and energy to invest in our church leadership.

Why We Sing Together

Every week, all around the world, congregations of believers in Jesus meet together. No matter the language and no matter the culture, corporate singing is considered a regular part of Christian worship. Why? Why do Christians sing together? What good does corporate singing do, and what are the benefits of singing together?

We sing because we're commanded to. God has revealed in Scripture how He desires to be worshiped, and He clearly desires and honors obedience. In the Psalms, we are commanded and encouraged over and over again to "sing to the Lord" (see Ps. 33:1, 68:4, 96:1, 135:3, 147:7). We're also instructed in the New Testament to sing "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Col. 3:16). However, these commands lead me to ask the question again: Why does God want us to sing?

First, we sing to reflect God's glory. The first thing we learn about God, as found in Genesis 1, is that God is Creator. When we sing and make music, we reflect the creative aspect of God's character and we have the privilege of joining in with part of who He is. We also reflect the Trinity by joining together in unity with the family of God. In singing, we also reflect God's glory by proclaiming truths about Him: When we sing about God's nature and His works, we magnify him, or show clearly how great and awesome He truly is.

Second, we sing to remember God's word. Music has an inherent ability to help us learn and remember quickly. Just before Paul tells us, in Colossians chapter 3, to sing "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs," he says to "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly." It seems clear that there is a connection between learning the Gospel of Jesus and singing together. As Jesus told the woman at the well, "God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). When we sing the truth about God and what He has done for us in Jesus Christ, we have a vibrant way of learning the Word of Christ, and remembering it.

Lastly, we sing to respond to God's grace. I once heard God's saving work be described as "being seized by the power of a great affection." When God's love and affection for us is clearly seen through the grace that He gives us in Jesus Christ, our natural response is to worship Him out of a heart of love and thankfulness. Jesus said that he who has been forgiven much loves much, and singing gives us an opportunity to respond to God's loving forgiveness in an emotionally expressive way.

Corporate singing is not just for those who are musically inclined. It is for all believers, as an act of obedience, and to Reflect God's glory, Remember God's Word, and Respond to God's grace. I want to challenge you to keep this in mind as you get ready for church on Sunday mornings. Our times of worshiping together can be much more meaningful to us, when we see clearly how God uses it for His glory and our growth.

In spirit and truth,
Daniel Cowan

Registration for 2012-13 is now open.

First Light is a Christian weekday program where children (babies through kindergarten) can have their FIRST experiences of Jesus Christ, the LIGHT of the World, as they build a solid spiritual and educational foundation.

We provide a hands-on learning environment where the child develops age-appropriate social skills and experiences success, thus promoting happiness and self-confidence.  Our curriculum is strong and inspires a desire and excitement to learn and also spurs creativity.  Our goal is also to provide a spiritual foundation through sharing, songs, and teaching about God, Jesus, and the Bible.

We offer several unique after-school programs for preschoolers, Tuesday-Friday, consisting of Ballet, Little Champs Sports, and music classes.

We encourage you to visit us and tour our campus or you may call our office at 770-978-5732 for additional information.

Come join us for fun and learning! For more information and registration forms click here.

Missions 2012

Internationally, we will be returning to Nicaragua during Spring Break 2012 to continue working in the village of El Bongo, where our church has invested heavily over the last two years. Registration for this trip is closed, as we have 24 team members already committed! This will be our largest group to Nicaragua thus far. Plans are being made to start a new work in a village in Haiti next summer, where no church currently exists. I am also very excited to announce that we plan to take a team across the Atlantic to Benin, Africa, to help an existing church with evangelistic crusades and medical ministry. Registration information about the Haiti and Benin trips will be released in the coming months.

I hope that every Christian reading this message will commit to being involved in missions either locally or globally. Heaven Sent - Home-Bound Ministry

Heaven Senthome-bound

"...inasmuch as you did it to one of the least

of these my brethren; you have done it unto Me."

-Matthew 25:40

Many home-bound seniors have been lifelong members of FBCS and served our Lord faithfully for years.  If it were possible, they would love to be with their church family.

The Heaven Sent Ministry provides an opportunity to minister to these by loving and giving back to them as they have given to others throughout their lives.

Our ministry is designed to touch member's lives with the love, comfort and compassion of Jesus Christ.  As volunteers, we will seek to encourage and enhance their lives while acting as a bridge to connect them to their church family and its ministries.

Who qualifies as a Heaven Sent member?

Members of First Baptist Snellville who cannot regularly attend Bible study and worship.  They may reside in their private homes, retirement communities consisting of assisted and independent living facilities, nursing homes or personal care homes.

Individuals may be adults who are:

  • Physically handicapped,
  • Dealing with declining health
  • Unable to drive any longer
  • Have recently had surgery and are recovering at home
  • Caretakers of those listed above

What can I do?

Do you know of anyone that would enjoy a visit once a month, cards and phone calls?

Would you be interested in becoming a volunteer for the Heaven Sent Ministry?
