I'm known as the "music sensor" in our house so even though the words are in Korean I'm thinking I need to know what he is saying so I can decide if I want to let my kids listen to this song repeatedly. While I'm looking up the translation on the internet I realize that Psy the Korean rapper has been EVERYWHERE in the USA recently. So I watch the video at the advice of Leigh (who's husband happens to be 1/2 Korean) and I'm laughing so hard I'm crying. Leigh also told me that SNL did a spoof on the Gangnam video and that Psy himself taught Britney Spears to do the Gangnam Style dance on the Ellen Degenerus show.
This is useless pop culture information but it made me laugh and I'm sure you'll hear about it eventually....so I thought it would be fun to share it with you today so your kids will think you are cool for knowing about it. It's hard to be cool when you have teenagers so I'm happy to help!
Psy's real name is Park Jae-sang. He is 34, the father of twin girls, and was born in Seoul, in the upscale Gangnam district. He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and released his first album of hip-hop songs in 2001.
Gangnam = Seoul's nouveau riche Gangnam neighborhood
Oppa = Father or Papa
Here's a link to the English translation of the lyrics to the entire song.
