Dear Parents,
Last Thursday was the State of the Schools address by Dr. Terry Grier. I have included a link to his speech and I encourage you to take a few minutes to read it. Click here to view the speech. The HISD public portal provides links to current information including information from board meetings, deadlines and initiatives. At the most recent School Board Meeting one of the items up for discussion involved school start/end times. You will find a survey link asking for feedback on the potential changes to the school day on the portal www.houstonisd.org.
- Congratulations goes out to our K-2 Name That Book team that took second place last week at the district competition
- A round of applause also goes out to our Odyssey of the Mind teams that competed at Paul Revere Middle School on Saturday. Three of our teams made it to the state competition! More information will be provided with the date and location of the state meet.
- Art Night will be held on Wednesday from 5:30-7:30pm in the cafeteria. It is a great event that celebrates the creativity of our students! Please join us for art activities and hotdogs.
- Click here to review the attached SDMC minutes. If any of you ever have an item you would like the SDMC to address, please send it to arangel@houstonisd.org.
- Please check the Lost and Found for items. Any items left over Spring Break will be donated to local charities.
I hope that all of you will have a wonderful time with family and friends over Spring Break. The children have been working very hard and deserve a break!! We will see you on March 19th!
Have a wonderful week!

Dear Mark Twain families,
I cannot believe that it is already Spring Break! I hope everyone will enjoy their time off from school next week and come back energized to finish off the year!
As you may know, Mark Twain Elementary is a founding member of +Works, a new nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization on a mission to help end America's bullying epidemic by promoting practical and measurable positive thinking programs for families, schools, and organizations. I would like to encourage you, as parents/guardians, to participate in this +Works Parent Evaluation Survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2012Twainparentguardian.
This helps +Works monitor the impact of +Works overall as well as specifically on our campus.
Don't forget that tonight is Art Night beginning at 6:30pm. Fun for the whole family! Have a great spring break! Best, Deanna

| Activity Works | | |

Activity Works is a classroom-based program designed to increase activity levels and healthy eating habits in elementary age children. Its goal is to teach children that exercising is fun and can easily become part of a daily routine.
Several classroom teachers are participating in the program. Usually once a day, students in the participating classrooms engage in a 12-minute, physical activity adventure that encompasses jogging, walking, skipping and more, all while learning school-based subjects!
Research shows that children who are more active do better in school and are healthier. And Activity Works is one way students can reach their daily 60 minutes of exercise!

How YOU can help support policies and funding for public schools
Over the past week I have heard several legislators make the misleading claim that they increased funding for public education this past session. As a parent with a child that is in a classroom with 29 other students this year, and as a parent that regularly attends local school board meetings where I witness their laborious and stressful discussions about where they can attempt to cut even more from our school district without further harm to our classrooms, I continue to be reminded why it is so imperative that we collaborate as a community to spread honest facts about the challenges confronting our public schools and engage others in support of effective policies and funding for public education in Texas.
Last session we all worked hard to minimize the impact of the legislature's cuts on Texas students. The result was a $5 billion reduction in funding as opposed to the nearly $10 billion that was originally proposed. Through our letters, petitions, meetings with legislators, community outreach, and rallies, WE made that difference. But there is still work to be done if we want public education to be a priority in Texas. In addition to the second round of cuts that most Texas school districts will experience this fall, the structural budget deficit that was not addressed by this legislature, coupled with the creative accounting that was utilized to balance the current budget with things like deferred payments, will set the stage for the potential of even more funding cuts again next year.
Below are 3 upcoming events where you can connect with other parents and community members to build a collaboration of support for Texas schools, learn how you can effectively advocate for public education, and hear updates on the issues.
I will also leave you with this gem of video from the House Appropriations Committee meeting earlier this week where you can hear directly from legislators that they did, in fact, cut funding to public education in Texas. As if our crowded classrooms and reduced resources had left us with any doubt.
