Dear Parents,
The International Festival was a grand success this past Saturday. A big thank you goes out to Fabia Hill and Gloria Pereira for coordinating the event. I would also like to thank the many families that created the tables representing the countries. It was such a wonderful experience trying the different foods and watching the very talented performers. These parents and friends shared personal artifacts representing the many different countries and shared their knowledge of the culture, history and customs. It truly is a special event that celebrates Mark Twain's diversity. Thanks to all of you that participated and attended.
Don't forget to mark your calendars with the dates of the upcoming state and local assessments. Students need to be in attendance on the dates when they will be tested and on time. The STAAR test has a time limit of four hours for each subject area and it is important that the teacher is able to begin testing as early as possible.
March 27-28 STAAR - 4th grade Writing (two days)
March 27 STAAR - 5th grade Math
March 28 STAAR- 5th grade Reading
April 24 STAAR - 3rd & 4th grade Math
April 25 STAAR - 3rd & 4th grade Reading
April 26 STAAR - 5th grade Science
May 7-17th Grades 1-5 Stanford/Aprenda
May 21-23 Grades 1-5 Non-Target Language Stanford/Aprenda (Dual Language only)
If you would like to learn more about the STAAR test you can go to www.houstonisd.org where you will find a link with videos, calendars and other resources.

| Activity Works | | |

Activity Works is a classroom-based program designed to increase activity levels and healthy eating habits in elementary age children. Its goal is to teach children that exercising is fun and can easily become part of a daily routine.
Several classroom teachers are participating in the program. Usually once a day, students in the participating classrooms engage in a 12-minute, physical activity adventure that encompasses jogging, walking, skipping and more, all while learning school-based subjects!
Research shows that children who are more active do better in school and are healthier. And Activity Works is one way students can reach their daily 60 minutes of exercise!

The annual Dad's Club golf tournament is set for Friday March 30th with a 1:00 PM shotgun Start at Wildcat Golf Club.
This tournament is a good way to spend a Friday afternoon in the Spring with a bunch of Twain parents. Individual tickets can be purchased for $95.00 and all players are treated to hot or boxed lunch prior to play, green fees, and open bar after golf for 1 hour.
Hole Sponsor ships are $500.00 and includes a foursome to the event, lunch, open bar after event, hole sponsor sign and event recognition. This is great way to sponsor a team and host new players or for 4 dads to get together and share a foursome.

+Works Talk IV: Bounce Back - The Importance of Raising Resilient Kids (3/1) |
|
120 people attended the last +TALK on Cybertechnology, Will you join us for the next + conversation?
+WORKS ANNOUNCES +TALK IV: BOUNCE BACK - THE IMPORTANCE OF RAISING
RESILIENT KIDS
THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 2012
6:30-8:00PM
Roberts Elementary School
6000 Greenbriar Street, Houston 77030
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: MRS. CATHY MUSCO GARCIA-PRATS
FREE +PARENTING GUIDE CD TO ALL ATTENDEES! ALL ARE WELCOME.
"It all comes down to resilience." We hear this from educators and even employers of recent college grads. To be productive, happy adults, kids need to learn to bounce back from life's hard knocks - and to deal with life's everyday mundaneness. To do this, we, as parents, need to get out of the way.
Join us as we explore the observation that our generation of parents can and should do a better job of raising resilient kids. Why do so many of us rush into the sandbox when a shovel is taken away, into the teacher if our child is teased once or twice, or into the principal's office with a lawyer's approach when our child has been caught making a mistake? Is this a reaction to the way we were raised? A byproduct of today's hypercompetitive society? Both - or something else? How can we support each other as parents, schools, and a community so that we can raise kids ready to face the world as adults - with verve? Please bring your reflections and questions and join in a +Community discussion entitled: BOUNCE BACK: The Importance of Raising Resilient Kids.
Our keynote speaker will be MRS. CATHY MUSCO GARCIA-PRATS, mother of ten sons and author of several books, including GOOD SONS DON'T JUST HAPPEN, and with her husband Dr. Joseph Garcia-Prats, GOOD FAMILIES DON'T JUST HAPPEN. Our distinguised panel will include:
* DR. ADIAHA FRANKLIN, Asst. Professor of Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine; Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics, Texas Children's Hospital, and +Parenting/+Teaching Guide contributor
* MRS. RITA GRAVES, Principal, Roberts Elementary School, HISD
* MR. JOHN MORRIS, LMSW-ACP, LMFT, marriage and family therapist and +Parenting/+Teaching Guide contributor
ADMISSION FREE to +Roundtable schools parents/staff:
* St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School * Mark Twain Elementary School * St. Paul's School * Pershing Middle School
* Durham Elementary School * St. Michael Catholic School * Kolter Elementary School * Roberts Elementary School
* The Awty International School
ALL ARE WELCOME. ADMISSION $5 for other members of our community.
Come to this +Talk, the fourth in a series of five this school year, and find out why it is important that we ALL - Dads, Moms, teachers, coaches, principals, students - take time to get informed in order to get AHEAD of bullying and create +Upstanding Communities.

Do you have any spare shorts/pants to donate to the School Nurse's office? On occasion a child may need a new pair of shorts/pants after an incident at school. The Nurse is currently running low on items to give to children in these times of need. She has plenty of Twain t-shirts but is specifically looking for school uniform bottoms in a variety of sizes: short, pants, skirts, etc. Any donations are greatly appreciated!
Thank you, Nurse Stephens

How YOU can help support policies and funding for public schools
Over the past week I have heard several legislators make the misleading claim that they increased funding for public education this past session. As a parent with a child that is in a classroom with 29 other students this year, and as a parent that regularly attends local school board meetings where I witness their laborious and stressful discussions about where they can attempt to cut even more from our school district without further harm to our classrooms, I continue to be reminded why it is so imperative that we collaborate as a community to spread honest facts about the challenges confronting our public schools and engage others in support of effective policies and funding for public education in Texas.
Last session we all worked hard to minimize the impact of the legislature's cuts on Texas students. The result was a $5 billion reduction in funding as opposed to the nearly $10 billion that was originally proposed. Through our letters, petitions, meetings with legislators, community outreach, and rallies, WE made that difference. But there is still work to be done if we want public education to be a priority in Texas. In addition to the second round of cuts that most Texas school districts will experience this fall, the structural budget deficit that was not addressed by this legislature, coupled with the creative accounting that was utilized to balance the current budget with things like deferred payments, will set the stage for the potential of even more funding cuts again next year.
Below are 3 upcoming events where you can connect with other parents and community members to build a collaboration of support for Texas schools, learn how you can effectively advocate for public education, and hear updates on the issues.
I will also leave you with this gem of video from the House Appropriations Committee meeting earlier this week where you can hear directly from legislators that they did, in fact, cut funding to public education in Texas. As if our crowded classrooms and reduced resources had left us with any doubt.

Wednesday, February 29 - 6-8 p.m.
