Dear Parents,

Last summer I met with representatives from HISD and Chevron Energy Solutions to discuss the energy efficiency at Mark Twain. Based on data that the district had compiled, Twain was to be audited to determine what measures could be taken to improve our energy efficiency. I have now received those recommendations and we can look forward to the following improvements:

  • Lighting Retrofits
  • Domestic Water Retrofits
  • Building Automation System Upgrades - air conditioning
  • Chilled Water Optimization
  • Install Window Film in selected areas to reduce solar load into building

There have been some calls to the school office regarding the traffic during dismissal. Please remember not to block driveways of our neighbors and refrain from parking on both sides of the street on Aberdeen east of the school. Emergency vehicles are unable to get through when cars park on both sides of the street and there is a carpool line. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Also I received a message from HISD about the Parent Student Connect - Student Account Issues (students impacted should re-register to gain instant access).

School events this week include:

  • Spelling Bee - 8:30am Tuesday morning (1/10)
  • STAAR presentation - 8:00am Wednesday (1/11), library
  • Early Dismissal - 12:30pm, Wednesday, (1/11)
  • STAAR presentation - 5:00pm, Thursday (1/12) library
  • Houston Texans Spirit day - Wear your Texans gear - Friday (1/13) Go Texans!!!
  • BINGO Night - 6:00-8:30pm, Friday (1/13)
  • STAAR Brochures will be available to parents unable to attend the Power Point presentation!

Have a great week!

PTO President Message

Dear Mark Twain families,

Hopefully, you have all settled back into a good routine since the winter break.  We are so thankful for everything that has been happening at school so far this year and cannot wait for a great second half.

On that note, one quick message: If you've been hoping to help or looking to get more involved in any way, please email, call or talk to any of our PTO directors or leaders. We know that time and schedules can be a challenge, but if you're interested, we would love to find a way to help you make it work.  If you have volunteered to help in the past and not been taken up on it, please know that it was an oversight or a result of us being busy. It was definitely not us wanting all the volunteering for ourselves (seriously!). Being open to everyone and helping connect with and serve all parents is a key goal of our group.

Bingo Night is this Friday (1/13) and I believe we still need volunteers to help sell Bingo cards and daubers.  If you are interested, please email Kristen Barker at kristenbrkr@yahoo.com.  Also, the 10th Annual International Festival is coming up and the first planning/informational meeting is this Thursday (1/19) morning at 8:00 a.m. in the cafeteria.

I really do hope to see you at Bingo Night - it is a LOT of fun (and there are great prizes as well)!  Plus, the Papa Johns Pizza truck will be there to provide pizza (in case your family wants to have a night off from cooking dinner).

Again, Happy New Year to all. Here's hoping our kids and our whole school community have a great 2012.

Deanna Sheaffer, PTO President

It's Time to Plan your Bash Social!

Bash Socials are always a huge success at our biggest fundraiser of the year, The Huckleberry Bash.  Bash Socials are a great way to have fun with your Mark Twain friends while contributing to the school!

Here's how you can get your Bash Socials started:

  1. Develop a party idea and plan your decorations, food, etc. around that idea.
  2. Think about the number of people you think would be appropriate for the party.  Bash Socials can have as few as 4 guests and as many as 100+ guest.
  3. Choose your location.  You can have a party at your home or you may need to reserve a party place (ex. Bowling alley, pottery store, gazebo at the park, etc.).
  4. Select a date for your party. You must have a date before submitting for auction catalog.  If it is an outdoor event, plan a rain date.
  5. Fill out your party plan on the Bash Socials donor form.  Be sure to list: all hosts, the theme for the party, the location, the date (and rain date), the beginning and ending times for the party and about what you think the cost per person or per couple. The form can be found on the PTO website (under Huckleberry Bash) or by emailing Susie Loredo at susieloredo@gmail.com  Your completed donation form is due to Susie Loredo no later than Friday, January 13, 2012.
  6. You will be given a guest list after the Bash.
  7. Invitations for your party are your responsibility.  You can send invitations via email, eVites, Paperpost, or hard copy invites.
  8. You and your co-hosts are responsible for underwriting the cost of the event.
  9. Have a GREAT time, meet new friends AND raise money for Mark Twain Elementary.

Please contact Susie Loredo if you need more information or if you already have a party in mind.  You can email Susie directly at susieloredo@gmail.com

Parent Enrichment, "Speaking in Tongues", 1/19, 6:30pm
Speaking in TonguesJanuary 19, 6:30 pm

Speaking in Tongues, a documentary

Twain Library

In a time of increasing globalization, is it enough to speak one language?  What are the challenges and the benefits of living in a multilingual community?  What does it mean to be a global citizen?

Dual Language and Parent Enrichment invite you to contemplate these and many other provocative questions explored in Speaking in Tongues.  This excellent documentary follows 4 children on an educational adventure in San Francisco and answers the question, what do we, as a community, need to know in the 21st century?  A short discussion will follow the presentation of the film.  For more information about the documentary go to http://speakingintonguesfilm.info/

+Talk III, Cybertechnology: Catching Up with our Kids!, 2/8/2012

+TALK III: CYBERTECHNOLOGY: CATCHING UP WITH OUR KIDS!

Wednesday, February 8, 2012
6:30-8:00PM
St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School
6802 Buffalo Speedway, Houston 77025

Technology shapes our lives today in a way we could never have imagined as children ourselves.  It is an exciting time, although the knowledge gap many of us feel as parents can be daunting! How do we balance our need for our children to be prepared for their future with our desire to keep them safe? How do we engage them in this ever-expanding world and somehow protect their privacy? What are our responsibilities as parents?  Why is it important to tune in to, support, and assist our children in developing the critical thinking skills needed to navigate these new waters?

Join us for a presentation and panel discussion that will address the opportunity we have as a community to teach our children the importance of "digital wellness" and digital citizenship and the weighty consequences that can hang in the balance when we find ourselves falling behind our children in this compelling, new digital world. Our expert panel will include:

  • AMY ACOSTA, PHD, Assistant Professor, Baylor College of Medicine and Licensed Professional Psychologist, Texas Children's Hospital
  • LARRY KAHN, Chief Technology Officer, The Kinkaid School
  • SPECIAL AGENT AMANDA HOUSTON, Houston FBI Cyber Crime Squad

ALL are welcome! FREE admission to +Works' nine +School members. $5 for other community members.
