November 29, 2011 | |
|
Dear Parents,
The holiday break is over and we are heading into an exciting few weeks before the Winter Holiday. There are many special events coming up but I want to assure you that the fine teachers at Twain will continue their high level of instruction right up until Field Day on December 16th.
I know that many of you probably read the article in the Chronicle about the new appraisal system for teachers that HISD has implemented. This new system requires that teachers be observed at least 4 times during the school year. Despite the pressures of this new system, and the challenges of preparing our students for a rigorous new state assessment (STAAR), the teachers at Twain bring enthusiasm, ingenuity and a high level of commitment to their classrooms each and everyday. Being a classroom teacher, is, in my opinion the most difficult and important job there is. This is a time of giving thanks and to my teachers and the parents that support them, I say thank you.
- Tuesday, November 29 - Picture retakes, contact - Anna Rangel
- Tuesday, November 29 , 6:30 p.m. - Dual Language Informational Coffee, contact - Gracie Martinez
- Week of December 5 - Kindergarten Stanford testing
- December 6th, 6:30pm - PTO Meeting in the library.
- December 8 , 7:00pm - Annie - performance by 4th grade students, directed by Janet Bardin
- December 12 - Winter Program - strings; beginning at 3pm see schedule below in the related article.
- December 16 - Field Day and last day of school for Winter Holiday. All students dismissed at 3pm.
- Tuesday, January 3rd: School resumes.
Have wonderful week!

| PTO President Message | |
Dear Mark Twain families,
Now that the Thanksgiving holidays are over...there is something else looming ahead. Can you guess what it is? No, not winter break...something else even more fun...the 2012 Huckleberry Bash! Planning is in full swing right now and the buzz is growing. This year's theme "Lights, Camera...BASH" promises that we will see many Twain folks dressed in fancy red carpet fashion or even as their favorite Hollywood star! I have already heard about some amazing classroom creations that are in progress and have word that we have exciting new auction items this year that are sure to please! If you are interested in volunteering to help with Bash or donating an item to the auction, please contact our Bash co-chairs, Dawn Koenig at dkoenig@thelittlegym.com or Kathryn Schultz at jnkschultz@sbcglobal.net. There is a lot to do in a short amount of time...we need all the help we can get. Also, don't forget to Save the Bash Date on your calendar - February 10, 2012.
Tonight is the Dual Language Recruitment meeting for interested parents. If you know someone who is interested in Dual Language Kindergarten for the 2012-13 school year, please encourage them to attend this meeting at 6:30 p.m. If you have any questions regarding this meeting or other dual language activities, please contact our PTO Dual Language representative, Liliana McKean at lmckean1@comcast.net. Many thanks to Liliana for taking the lead on all our dual language activities, including the Mark Twain Soccer Tournament last weekend which was a very fun event!
Have a great week!
Best,
Deanna Sheaffer, PTO President

| Jump Rope for Heart! 12/15 | |
It takes heart to be a hero! Beginning November 18th, Mark Twain will be participating in the annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser! Students will join millions of other children across the country in a meaningful opportunity to learn how jumping rope is good for the heart and to help save lives.
Help your child get involved! If deciding to participate, help your child raise money to help others who have cardiovascular disease, including kids! You can start now and visit americanheart.org/jump to set up a Web page and e-mail friends/family to make secure donations. Or use the collection envelope your child will receive. Whether or not you and your children decide to participate in the fundraising portion of this "event," all students will have the chance to participate in jump rope activities during Physical Education class at the end of our Jump Rope for Heart campaign.
Special Notes:
*Your child will receive thank-you gifts based on the donations he or she collects (or you can elect not to receive them.)
*Our school will also earn free physical education equipment.
*For the safety of our children, we ask that your child not go door-to-door or ask strangers for donations.
*Collection envelopes are due December 15th and are to be turned in to Coach Jody.

| Drink Pouch Brigade®! | |
Turn your used drink pouches into MONEY for our School. We have placed a drink pouch recycle bin in the cafeteria by the lost and found closet. Please encourage your children to deposit their empty pouches there after lunch and feel free to bring your pouches from home. Pouches need to be empty and clean with no straws. Besides turning the pouches into money for the school TerraCycle, Capri Sun® and Honest Kids® are working together to put an end to this awful loss of resources. As an eco-friendly innovator, TerraCycle converts the drink pouch material into unique from tote bags and pencil cases to plastic lumber and pavers! TerraCycle is proud to team up with the largest producer of drink pouches in the country, Capri Sun, and a young organic entry into the market, Honest Kids, to help address this problem! Together with your help we CAN make a difference! For information, contact Liliana McKean at lmckean1@comcast.net.
