Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. It is a pleasure to begin this year as your principal. For those of you that are new to Twain, I have been here since 1991 as a teacher, a counselor and the assistant principal. It is an honor to serve in this new role and I am excited about the journey that lies ahead.
It is a year of new beginnings and sad farewells. We welcome eight new staff members Blair Brown - kindergarten, Lourdes Paschal - first grade, four new third grade teachers - Karen Watts, Jennifer Dennis, Ky Nguyen and Elesia Reed and in fifth grade, Rudy Castillo. In addition to these wonderful new teachers we also welcome Charlotte Stephens as our school nurse. Last week we said goodbye to Monica Phillips who lost her courageous battle with cancer. Monica was a teacher, a parent, a community member and our friend. As we move forward, the Twain family will look at ways to remember Monica.
While the summer heat has taken a toll on our beautiful grounds a number of improvements have occurred which have enhanced the campus. All of the common areas have a fresh coat of paint and HISD has been working diligently to repair the air conditioning system and to address other facility issues.
A few reminders as we head into the new school year: We need your help to ensure that the school day gets off to a good start. School begins at 8:00 a.m. with the classroom doors opening at 7:50am. Until 7:50, teachers will be preparing for the day, so students are asked to report to the cafeteria if they arrive before that time. Breakfast in the Classroom will continue and staff members will be set up around the building at 7:50 to pass out the breakfasts for those interested.
We encourage parents to communicate with the classroom teachers - it is that relationship that provides the foundation for a good school year! The first few minutes of the day teachers must focus on their students and getting the day off to a good start. The instructional day begins immediately after morning announcements so please be respectful of this time and schedule conferences during planning times or before or after school. We have also asked teachers to refrain from visiting with parents while they are monitoring their students in the carpool line after school. Conversations in the carpool line make it difficult for the staff to dismiss the students in a safe and orderly fashion. We welcome parents to visit with staff members at 3:10pm once carpool activities have been completed.
The parents at Twain play a critical role in the school. I want to thank all of you that helped with the back to school activities. Your enthusiasm and commitment to Twain is amazing! I look forward to meeting all of you at the Open House on Tuesday, September 13th and at the Grade Level Coffees held in these first few weeks.
I am proud of the hard work that the teachers and staff have put in to prepare the classrooms and the building to welcome your children. My door is open and I hope together we can continue the collaborative spirit that makes Mark Twain Elementary the best elementary school in the world!!
Sincerely,
Melissa Patin

| Message from our PTO President | |
Dear Mark Twain Families,
Welcome back to another GREAT year at Mark Twain Elementary!
I would like to extend a special greeting to those of you who are new to our school this year. We are excited to have you and your children join our dynamic community. We would also like to welcome the new staff to the Mark Twain family. I truly look forward to serving with you this year as the President of the PTO.
As members of the PTO, you as individuals and us as a collective group of families will make this year at Mark Twain a great success because of the unique talents, backgrounds and perspectives that we each possess. We will act as a support system to our principal, teachers and staff in numerous ways which positively impacts the educational experience for all of our children. Your children will bring home a packet, please read the information thoroughly and complete your informatino for the student directory online. If you are able, we encourage you to make a monetary donation through the Friends and Family Campaign. Your participation, whether through volunteer hours, monetary donations and/or making certain your children are successful is vital to building a strong community at Mark Twain.
Because of the amount of paper we use that eventually gets thrown away, we are continuing an effort this year to dramatically reduce our paper usage. This will help our environment AND reduce our expenses. Rather than send home fliers, we will send emails and post information on our website. In order to be an informed member of the community we will encourage you all year to use the Mark Twain website at www.marktwainpto.org. This is an invaluable resource to keep you up to date regarding upcoming PTO events. One of our primary methods of communication is this weekly electronic newsletter that families receive via email on Tuesdays. We also encourage you to attend PTO meetings that are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the school library. Free babysitting is provided at every meeting.
On behalf of the Mark Twain PTO, I would once again like to extend a warm welcome and best wishes for a successful school year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. I look forward to working with each of you so that together we can make a positive impact on our children's education at Mark Twain.
Best,
Deanna Sheaffer

Join the Friends and Family Campaign | |
Our Friends & Family Campaign is an important part of our overall PTO fundraising program. This year we will raise funds for teachers, students, classrooms as well as technology support, curriculum enrichment, staff appreciation, facility enhancements, IB certification, teacher training and much more. Funds raised through our Friends & Family campaign in August and September help support programming early in the academic year such as teacher start-up funds, communication vehicles and event expenses.
Please consider supporting these endeavors and more by making a tax-deductible donation to the Mark Twain PTO and participating in our Friends & Family Campaign. Click here to fill out the form and for information regarding giving levels and associated benefits as well as information on Corporate Matching Gift Programs. Please return the form along with your gift by Friday, September 16, 2011.
In advance, we thank you for your support! - Stormy Hayes-Knipe, VP Membership |
| School Store Help Needed | |
The School Store is looking for a few more volunteers to help run the store this year. We have open shifts on Monday and Tuesday mornings and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 7:45 to 8:15am. This is a fun opportunity to meet lots of great people and provide a wonderful service to the whole school. Please contact Kathleen Fenoy at kathleenfenoy@yahoo.com or Vera Hashem at vhashem@gmail.com if you are interested or if we can answer any questions. |
| Volunteers in the Schools (VIPS) New Procedures | |
HISD has implemented some new volunteer procedures for this school year. All returning volunteers must bring their driver's license to Vicky Sanchez in the school office to be cleared to volunteer.
"In an effort to provide the highest quality of safety in our schools and obtain updated volunteer information, there will be a change in procedures and guidelines for all returning volunteers currently registered in HISD's volunteer data system known as Volunteers In Schools Information Tracking System (VISITS). Effective Monday, August 22, 2011, all volunteers registered in the VISITS Application database prior to June 1, 2011 will be placed in INACTIVE Status in the VISITS database. In order for a returning volunteer to be removed from Inactive status and be identified as an ACTIVE volunteer for the 2011 - 2012 school year, he/she will need to show proof of an acceptable photo ID to the school's VISITS coordinator to verify and submit for the background check. Note: The returning volunteer will not need to register online again. Only volunteers with a Cleared status will be able to volunteer in HISD."
Finally, if you have your VIPS badge at home, please bring it back to the office. ALL volunteers must obtain their badge from the office and sign in. I realize that this may be a pain to those of you that are at the school a lot, however, it is for the safety of all of our children. You will no longer be allowed to flash your badge through the window. PLEASE, stop by the office, sign in, and obtain your badge. |
