SI Los Angeles NEWS
Fellowship with a purpose!
Greetings!

Jeri Durham

Well, we have completed another year fulfilling the mission of SI.  Although we are saddened by the loss of our beloved Jackie Johns, we should be proud of the services we have provided our community.  We have participated in a number of activities and have won the Governor's Award for programming.  I thank you all for your support of our programs and projects. Special kudos to Ginger Cole and Maria Romero for their leadership on the myriad activities in which we have been involved.  Congratulations are also due to Ginger for being selected to chair the District 2 Nominating Committee, to Sheila Tatum for being selected (again) to chair the Spring Conference and to Julie Mairs for continuing to chair the Soroptimist STOP Trafficking efforts for Camino Real Region.

I hope that you will join us as we install our officers for 2010-2011 on June 16, 2010 at 6:00 PM at McCormick and Schmick's in downtown LA.  It will be a hosted dinner and District 2 Director Margo Bottcher will be there to install the new officers.

Our annual planning retreat will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Barbara Jury's residence just east of downtown LA.  Please save the date.  Read more below about some of the things we'll be discussing.   We need everyone's input as we plan activities for the upcoming year.  So put on your thinking caps and join us!

You will shortly be receiving a communication from our club treasurer, Irene Recendez, regarding dues which are payable now.  Please be timely in your response.

I wish you all a wonderful summer and thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president this past year.  It has been a truly rewarding experience.

Blessings to all,

President Jeri

Jeri Takes Another Term as President

At the business meeting on June 2nd, officers for the fiscal year beginning July 1 were elected. President Jeri Durham and 1st VP Ginger Cole will both be continuing in their offices next year. Carole Oglesby will be 2nd Vice President (responsible for Ways & Means activities).  Joyce Jacob will be Secretary and Janet Elliott will be Treasurer.  For the four Director positions who also serve on the Board, Karen Johnson and Dona Lawrie will fill the 2 year term from 2010-2012 and Barbara Jury and Irene Recendez will fill the remaining year of the term from 2009-2011.

In addition, as is traditional, two Delegates and Alternates were selected who will represent SILA at the Regional Spring Conference.  The club selects two delegates for overlapping 2 year terms.  Barbara Jury, with Carole Oglesby as the Alternate, will be the Delegate in 2011 and 2012.  Joan Johnson, with Joyce Jacob as the Alternate, will complete the final year of the other 2 year term and be the second Delegate in 2011.
Installation Dinner will be on June 16th

Margo BottcherThe last meeting of the fiscal year will be the Installation Dinner on Wednesday, June 16th.  It will be held at McCormick & Schmick's in Downtown LA from 6-8pm.  The special guest and installing Officer will be Margo Bottcher, our current District 2 Director who is from SI Glendale.

McCormick & Schmick's is located at 4th & Hope.  Three hours of free self parking is available under the building.  The dinner for members will be covered by the club and will include a choice of chicken or fish off the banquet menu. Guests, including family, friends and prospective members, are welcome.  Since we will need an exact count, please be sure to RSVP to the separate email for this meeting which will be sent out next week.
Planning Retreat on August 7th

The annual Planning Retreat will be held on Saturday, August 7th, from 9am to 2pm, at Barbara Jury's residential complex, Hollenbeck Palms, at 573 South Boyle Avenue.  The purpose of the retreat is to spend some time discussing and planning the major goals for next club year. We will be developing a preliminary budget and planning for a big membership drive.  El Camino Region has implemented a new program in which the fees for new members will be paid by the region (with the exception of local dues).  That should be a big incentive to attract new members.  We are also considering doing a PR push to get our name more recognized in the downtown area.  Please put this date on your calendar now so that you'll be able to join in the planning.
Dues Are Due

Annual Soroptimist dues for the fiscal year beginning July 1st are collected in June.  Club Treasurer, Irene Recendez, will be mailing a bill to all current members shortly.  Please mail your check back to Irene promptly so that she can submit the total for SILA before the deadline.  Remember the total dues bill includes dues for SI of the Americas (our Federation), Camino Real (our Region), and SILA.  In addition, there are optional amounts that are collected to support various international and regional projects.  Annual dues, including optional payments, for an active member total $264.40.

Choose the New Long Term Project

Soroptimists worldwide will soon be receiving information from their clubs, regions, and Federations asking for their input on the selection of the topic for the new long term project. This new project will replace the Quadrennial Project and will provide an opportunity for Soroptimists from all corners of the globe to join together in working towards a common goal locally and internationally.

Soroptimists are asked to choose between two topics:

Click the links above to download two 3-page background papers (one for each topic).  In these, you can find all of the information and inspiration needed to make your choice.
