Church of the Incarnation Sunday Announcements
March 6, 2011

A note of thanks: Thank you to all my friends here at the church for your lovely cards, words of sympathy and many hugs for me and my daughters following the death of my son, Matthew. You are a wonderful support to all of us. A special thanks to Claire, Eric and to Harold Julander for his beautiful music. And, of course, thank you to the Ladies of the Guild of the Incarnation for their lovely reception after the service (even without me giving orders). A very special thank you to Father Matt for his love and support.

The Poetry Group is back! We will meet this coming Wednesday, March 9 (1:30-3 pm in the library). "Poetry is the language of devotion in prayer, chant and song. Reading poetry creates clarity, deepens and expands spiritual inquiry, and cultivates wisdom, compassion, self-confidence, patience and love" (Robert McDowell). This group explores a wide range of poets and their poetry. Through readings and discussions we discover the richness of this art and how it can be used as a spiritual practice in our lives. There is a sign-up sheet on the Small Group table if you're interested in joining.

We are sorry to report that Priscilla Hall-Moore, a long-time member of Incarnation and the daughter of former rector Percy Hall, died peacefully in her bed this morning.  We will hold a Memorial Service for her on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 2 pm at the church; reception to follow in the parish hall.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Church of the Incarnation.

Prayer of the Heart group practice in March is Thursday, Mar. 10, 5 - 6:30pm, in the Clergy Conference Room. All are welcome who wish to practice the Prayer of the Heart (the Jesus Prayer) in a group. Any questions, or more information, please call Lisa Jang, (707) 527-9549.

Our next "Twilight" Pipe Organ Mini Recital will be this coming Friday evening, March 11, at 6 pm. John Burke, organist at Trinity Episcopal Church of Sonoma, will be playing a recital of "MANUALS ONLY" pieces. John was a long time organist in the East Bay, is over 90 years old, and still loves to play. Last year he was still giving recitals on the piano in the area and has found that he doesn't quite have the dexterity with his feet like he used to. So I suggested he treat us with a program of pieces for 'hands only.' There is a large body of literature of the organ for "MANUALS ONLY," so we will get the opportunity to experience it with John as our guide. Following the recital, as usual, all are invited to a 'no host' dinner at a local restaurant with our guest artist. A free will offering is taken at the event to offset costs and to support the purchase of our 32' pedal stop on the organ. Please contact Harold Julander, 707-694-1896 for any further details or questions.

The latest newsletter has been emailed and mailed by the postal service.  If you receive the newsletter by email and would like to have a hard copy, pick one up in Farlander Hall.

Get yourself on the Do Not Call list for cell phones, which has gone into effect! As you know, you may be charged for every incoming call whether you want it or not. To be added to the Do Not Call list for cell phones, you must call the number 888-382-1222, from your cell phone (don't use your home phone).

The Evening Women's Group will meet on Tuesday, March 15, at 7 pm, at the home of Amy Nykamp. All women are welcome to join us. We are a supportive group providing a place to share our lives and our spiritual journeys with each other, building friendships as we go. If you have any questions, please contact Donna Wiuff at (707) 837-8768.

The Outreach Commission Needs You! The Outreach Commission is looking for new people to join our group. The commission considers and recommends to the vestry ways in which our resources can be best employed, with the objective to make a positive Christian impact on the world around us. The group currently meets about once every other month, so the commitment is low but the need is high! Please contact Stephanie Blair if you are interested: 837-2972.  Thank you!!

What's going on in Small Groups? There currently are some new small groups that are starting to get off the ground. A few weeks ago you read about the Theatre-Goers Group (more on that in next week's bulletin). We also will be starting up an Animal Ministry small group, look for more information in a few weeks. I'm working with a few people and we're discussing the possibility of starting a Cooking Group and an Art Group. If you have an idea for a group or a hobby that you think others might want to join you in, then pick up a flyer on the Small Group table and see how easy it is to start your own Small Group!

Small Groups at Incarnation

What Are Small Groups? A Small Group is simply a group of people who gather on a regular basis for friendship, conversation, and support. We have Small Groups covering a variety of different topics and new groups forming all the time, looking for people just like you! Check out the Small Groups table in Farlander and if you would like more information, sign-up or please call Mitch Garcia at 707-703-4162 or email  . If you are interested in starting a small group, please call or email!

Centering Prayer: Meets every Monday from 5:00-6:00 pm in the Clergy Conference Room. Centering Prayer is a technique of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God's presence within us. This practice of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. All are welcome!

Philosophy Group: Come check out the philosophy reading and discussion group.  Philosophy is traditionally defined as the love of wisdom, but the most famous philosopher of antiquity (Socrates) claimed to know nothing at all. In the same spirit, Proverbs 3:5 warns that human understanding may not be so firm as we believe it to be. Philosophy studies matters that are elusive, yet there is something satisfying about the activity of exploring itself. Join a group where you can explore the limits of your understanding and look deeper into questions about knowledge, truth, justice, being and ethics. We will read texts as a group and come together to ask questions and discuss them in a spirit of openness and inquiry. For location and date and times of our gathering, please email: kennethwayneblair@gmail.com or call: 707-703-4162.

Bridge Group: Bridge--anyone? All who are interested in bridge for fun, friendship and fellowship are invited. All are welcome: experienced players, beginners, and those wanting to learn. We meet on Sunday afternoons twice a month.

Poetry Group: The Poetry Group will be starting up again on March 9 (Wednesday 1:30-3pm). This group explores a wide range of poets and their poetry. Through reading and conversation we discover the richness of this art and how it can be used as a spiritual practice in our lives. If you're interested in attending or would like more information there is a sign-up sheet on the Small Group table in Farlander Hall. Or you can contact smallgroups@incarnation-sr.org.

Prayer of the Heart: We meet about once a month, to practice the Prayer of the Heart (The Jesus Prayer) together, to support and enhance our individual practice (if we have one). Everyone who wishes to practice the Prayer of the Heart in a group is welcome.

Tuesday Book Group: This group meets every Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 AM in the library. A lively morning study group that pursues a variety of faith issues. Sometimes we gather for Bible study, sometimes we consider faith issues as raised in contemporary literature, sometimes we gather for a book study. Most courses run 6-8 weeks. Our search is for the ways life and faith merging in surprising ways and places.

Men's Group: Meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 7 PM in the Sanctuary. This group explores the challenges men face in living their lives of faith in a safe, intimate, environment.

Evening Women's Group: Meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM in a local home. This is a supportive group that provides a place to share our lives and our spiritual journeys.

Why should I be in a Small Group? The simple answer is: you will not grow in your relationship to God in isolation. Sunday worship is where we gather to celebrate and praise God as a body, in a large group setting. Small Groups are where we see God working in our own lives as well as the lives of others. Small Groups are gatherings where we can encourage each other and where we are connected with one another-Small Groups are where this happens. If you are not yet involved, now is the time!

Words to Ponder:

Nothing is a waste of time if you use your experience wisely.
