Spam = Junk mail. It has many intended purposes, from product advertisements to pleas for money. It's often the kind that purportedly comes from someone you know.
If any email you receive is suspicious and it claims to come from someone you know, DON'T OPEN IT, AND DON'T REPLY. CALL THE PERSON who sent it to you, to verify its validity.
There are many, many scams out there that seem legitimate -- don't let them fool you. Take good care of yourself and others!
