Heavenly Treasures Open House today! It's the day you've been waiting for - Heavenly Treasures Thrift and Gift is open today from 9-1! We know how important it is to save money these days, and you'll save a ton when you shop with us. Our racks and shelves are bursting with incredible deals--designer clothes, shoes, handbags, new jewelry, books--you name it, we probably have it! And, with any luck, we'll have our new shipment of high quality, reasonably priced French soaps, along with some Easter gifts. Our prices are the lowest in the area, so you can shop without breaking the bank or having guilt pangs. And best of all, the money you spend at Heavenly Treasures goes right back into our community. 90% of our profits are donated to social service and justice organizations. Walk over after services and see what we have; we're just two doors north on Mendocino Avenue. You never know what treasures are in store!

Join the Conversation! The leaders of this parish are about to decide whether or not to join the North Bay Sponsoring Committee - the organization that we discussed with Anna Eng at our Annual Meeting in January. Whether you think this is a good idea for the parish OR a bad idea, we need your input.  Today, at 4:00 pm, is an important meeting - to learn more about this project, and to hear from you.  Leaders from the Unitarian-Universalist congregation, and from Resurrection Catholic Parish, will be with us to talk about their experience as members of this organization; and members of Vestry will be there to hear from you.  Please come: again, 4 pm today (Feb. 28), beginning in the church, and then moving to Farlander to share a delicious meal together.  Fr. Matt is bringing a big pot of hearty soup and bread; beverages will also be on hand. Bring a desert or a salad if you'd like!

The Guild of the Incarnation has its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 2. This month we will begin with communion at 10:30 am in the church and then go to Farlander Hall at 11:00 am for the business meeting. A potluck luncheon follows at noon. All are welcome to attend. If attending the luncheon, please bring a dish to share. A program on Identity Theft will follow the luncheon.

Our Lenten Series "Lent: A Season of Reconciliation, Forgiveness and Hope"  is on Wednesday starting at 6 pm with a delicious Lenten meal in Farlander Hall. This is followed by our Lenten Series in the church at 6:45 pm. The series will continue on Wednesdays through March 24. We will be exploring different aspects of hope, mercy, and understanding. Along with Fr. Matt, we will have different speakers presenting during this series. This will be a wonderful experience and we look forward to having you be a part of this event! Please take a moment and sign-up if you're interested in attending, the sign-up sheets are on the Small Group table in Farlander Hall. A note for all about Small Group Sunday from Mitch Garcia:  It was a good Sunday for sign-ups. We had 14 people interested in current groups. I will be contacting the leaders of those groups and they will follow-up with them. We also had 25 people sign-up for the Lenten Supper/Series, and two sign-up for the next Inquirers/Seekers class!

More sad news: We've been informed that one of the people who died in last week's plane crash in East Palo Alto was Andrew Ingram, a former acolyte, crucifer, and active member at Incarnation. Andrew's parents, Paul and Barbara, were also very active, serving on Vestry and the like. The family moved to Washington some years ago. Cards of sympathy may be sent to them at: 2448 Pheasant Way, Ferndale, WA 98248.

Wanted: Bookstore Assistants from the 11:15 Service! The Bookstore is still looking for additional help. We have had a wonderful response from parishioners who attend the 9:15 service and who have volunteered to work one Sunday a month following that service. However, we still need help for about a half-hour  following the 11:15 service. If you are interested in this really fun job, please see Maggie in the Bookstore or call her at 707-495-2494.

Incarnation Website News: There is a new Question and Answer section about Small Groups on our website. Go to our site (www.incarnation-sr.org) and click on Small Groups. Then on the left-hand side scroll down and you will see where you can ask a question or view the Q&A by clicking on the link. Check it out!

Small Group News: The Tuesday Evening Bible Group (meets every other Tuesday from 6:30-8 pm in a local home) is an open group and you are welcome to attend. We currently are discussing and exploring the Lectionary readings before each Sunday. We have a time of worship, we open the scriptures and share our stories, we pray, and we have a time of fellowship over some snacks. We hope you will join us. For more information when our next gathering is, call Mitch at 707-703-4162 or email smallgroups@incarnation-sr.org.

New Small Group forming: Philosophy and Religion! Come check out the philosophy reading and discussion group. Philosophy is traditionally defined as the love of wisdom, but the most famous philosopher of antiquity (Socrates) claimed to know nothing at all. In the same spirit, Proverbs 3:5 warns that human understanding may not be so firm as we believe it to be. Philosophy studies matters that are elusive,  yet there is something satisfying about the activity of exploring itself. Join a group where you can explore the limits of your understanding and look deeper into questions about knowledge, truth, justice, being and ethics. We will read texts as a group and come together to ask questions and discuss them in a spirit of openness and inquiry. Ultimately the direction of the readings will be determined by the interest of the group that develops. Ken Blair will be facilitating this new group. Ken taught Critical Thinking at San Francisco State and at SRJC. He's currently an adjunct faculty member at SRJC. There is a sign-up sheet on the Small Group table in Farlander  Hall or you can contact Mitch Garcia at smallgroups@incarnation-sr.org.

The Prayer of the Heart Group March meeting is Tuesday, March 9, 7 - 8:30 pm, in the Clergy Conference Room. All are welcome who want to practice the Prayer of the Heart (the Jesus Prayer) in a group. If you have any questions, or for more information, please contact Lisa Jang, 707-527-9549.

Come to a training for all Eucharistic Visitors, Friendly Visitors, Flower Ministers and Pastoral Care Coordinators! Saturday, March 20, 2010 in Farlander Hall. 8:30 am (Sharp!) to 4:30 pm. Continental breakfast, gourmet lunch, and snacks will be served!Pastoral care begins with the first contact, and the Pastoral Care Team will be able to lend greater emotional support, if all team members are on the same page with a consistent approach to those we serve. This training day will be a day of fellowship and reflection on how best to accompany and give emotional support to those we serve. We will discuss listening skills, standards of confidentiality and the work done by each ministry group. Fr. Ed will be conducting the Diocesan Training on Sexual Misconduct Prevention component. Please RSVP to La Velle Seely-Ricketts at 707-528-2700 or Diane Bruce at 707-838-8676 to confirm that you'll be there. All are invited who would like to explore the possibility of serving on the Pastoral Care team. (Please note that those presently serving and wish to continue serving should plan to attend.)

Come to four free ballroom classes, then a dance to raise money for Haiti. See the flier in Farlander Hall. Instructor Jett Sharen has been a television and movie dancer for many years, from New York and Hollywood.  Let's have fun - learn waltz/foxtrot/rumba and swing and then have a dance. If interested please sign up. Sessions will start in mid-April.

Just a reminder that Incarnation is a Scent-Free zone!! Many people are allergic to fragrances and it is really best for all if perfumes and men's colognes/after shave lotion are not worn on our campus. Thank you for your consideration!

From the Pastoral Care Ministry: Do you know a shut-in or of someone who may be recovering from an illness or surgery and would be cheered by a note or a card from Incarnation? Please call Diane Bruce at 707-838-8676 and she will send a card.

Can you recognize the signs of a stroke? The key letters are S,T,R. Go to the Outreach bulletin board in Farlander Hall to find what they mean. It is something you should know for yourself and those around you.

Words to Ponder: Pray - period! Don't expect anything. Or better, expect nothing. Prayer cleanses us of expectations and allows holy will, providence, and life itself an entry. What could be more worth the effort -- or the noneffort?

Spiritual Practice at Home: February 2010

Guidelines for Right Speech
Adapted from 18th century Jewish sage Rabbi Israel Meir Kagan

1. Do not spread a negative image of someone, even if that image is true.
2. Do not share information that can cause physical, financial, emotional or spiritual harm.
3. Do not embarrass people, even in jest.
4. Do not pretend that writing or body language or innuendo is not "speech."
5. Do not speak against a community, race, ethnic group, gender, or age group.
6. Do not gossip, even to your spouse, relatives, or close friends.
7. Do not repeat gossip, even when it is generally known.
8. Do not tell people negative things said about them, for this can lead to needless conflict.
9. Do not listen to gossip.  Give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

Ask yourself three questions before you speak:

1. Is it true?
2. Is it kind?
3. Is it necessary?

Focus on the quality of your speech and see that what you say is in line with the attributes you want to cultivate. Faulty speech is one of the primary ways we complicate our lives.

The Baal Shem Tov, founder of the eighteenth-century Jewish mystical movement called Hasidism, (from the Hebrew word chesed, meaning "kindness"), taught that each of us is born with a fixed number of words to speak, and when we have spoken the last of these words, we die.  Since we don't know how many words are ours to speak and we have no idea how many words we have left to speak, do we want to die with words such as, "You idiot" on our tongue?

Our words can hurt as well as heal, and speaking kind words figures prominently in the sacred art of loving-kindness. Lying to people isn't acceptable, but neither is hurting a person with the truth. Find a way of being for others in kindness with your speech whenever possible.
