Skyscraper farms?
As more and more
people are talking about the new "urban agrarians," what does truly
local food mean if you live in a city?
Vertical farming, growing either hydroponically or
aeroponically, is a concept that is exciting architects and city planners
around the world. A public health official from last Sunday's New York Times
lays out the case for such farms - and while we will always work to strengthen
traditional (soil-based) farming, this is an exciting concept that could meet the food needs of a lot of people.
You can read more about vertical farming here.
And click here for some pretty cool looking photos of what a major vertical farm could look like.
Getting Real About the High Price of Cheap Food - Time
MagazineHey, when Time magazine is printing articles like this, you
know something must be happening out there!
An excellent overview of the high cost of cheap food, from
agricultural subsidies and environmental destruction to our national epidemics
of obesity and diabetes. You will recognize most of this if you have read
Michael Pollan or related authors, but it's great to know what Americans are
now reading in the mainstream media.
Read the Time magazine article here.
School and Community Farming in Rochester, New York
It's happening all over the country, and here's another example:
Rochester Roots is creating a locally sustainable food
system that ensures community food security. It works with teachers, students,
parents, neighbors, master gardeners and various community partners to
transform underutilized schoolyards into urban gardens, with the produce grown
at the schools harvested and distributed to students and community members who
work in the gardens.
For an excellent You Tube video on the school, check here.
Or go to the Rochester Roots website here.
That's it! And don't forget to help Montgomery Victory Gardens grow - send us your feedback and suggestions! Let us know what's on your mind, and please send us any items, particularly about local food production, that MVG can promote. Email to info@montgomeryvictorygardens.org Thanks!Gordon Clark,
