ART CALLS:
WCA National Call for Art:
"Man as Object - Reversing the Gaze" will be held at SOMArts Cultural Center, San Francisco, CA from November 4-26th and juried by Tanya Augsburg, Ph.D, SF State University.
Deadline: Friday, May 20, 2011
The exhibition committee consisting of Karen Gutfreund, Priscilla Otani, Brenda Oelbaum and Tanya Augsburg are happy to announce we received the 2011 Curatorial Award from SOMArts Cultural Center, San Francisco. Over 200 applications were submitted with only four being chosen. We are reopening the show and encourage you to submit work, particularily video, installation, mixed media and painting. The entry deadline is Friday, May 20th and there is no entry fee. There will be a variety of programs surrounding the exhibition including performance art, "peepshow drawing circles", film screenings and discussion panels.
Some work has already been chosen for this exhibition for the initial proposal, however we are looking for up to an additional 20 pieces for the gallery.
Prospectus: The goal of this exhibition "Man as Object: Reversing the Gaze" is to turn the tables and to exhibit works that put the male in the position of subject and spectacle. Not only will the male be taking on the female role, but the surveyor is now female, no longer a "masculine" part of the female, thus creating a truly Feminist stance. The male is the spectacle for a woman's enjoyment or mere viewing.
This is effective in two ways: as the male viewer encounters the male nude, he is forced like many women before him to turn the mirror on himself and secondly to feel the powerlessness of being owned or submissive. The individualism of the artist, the thinker, the patron, the owner, and the woman is transformed. The person who is the object of their activities, the man, is treated as a thing or an abstraction. By reversing the unequal relationship between men and women that is so deeply embedded in our culture, men will do to themselves what they have done to women for centuries. They observe themselves and their own masculinity as women observe their own femininity.
This exhibition will explore women's responses to a male dominated world in a different way than an exhibition of women's images of themselves. It will mark an important development in Feminist Art which has long concentrated on images of women meant to challenge stereotypical notions of womanhood. A gallery filled with works depicting men, created by women, comments on the prevalence of the male gaze in art and of the continued domination of male artists exhibiting in galleries and museums.
This show will travel to the Kinsey Institute Gallery in summer of 2012.

news bits
The Smithsonian Institution is under attack A report from National Coalition Against Censorship. The Smithsonian Institution is under attack--as are the rights of artists and museum goers. On October 30, 2010, the National Portrait Gallery opened the exhibition: "Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture," the first major museum exhibition to focus on sexual difference in the making of modern American portraiture. The exhibition was on a full month when a conservative blogger inflamed the Catholic League, which attacked one of the video's images, 11 seconds of ants crawling on a crucifix. They declared it "hate speech" Enter, the new House Speaker, Rep. John Boehner and other Republican legislators who demanded the removal of the video, threatening the Smithsonian with the loss of funding. It was removed within an hour!!!
Kass Meridian Gallery owner in River North was indicted
The owner of the Kass Meridian Gallery in River North was indicted along with 3 others for selling fake works by Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali and other masters. The prints had fake signatures and false numerical markings. Thousands of fake prints were dumped on the market. An art teacher from Elmhurst thinks he is one of those duped by the gallery. He contacted attorney Scott Hodes who reminded him that there is a state law, Fine Prints Disclosure Act that allows anyone knowingly ripped off by a dealer to recover three times the cost of the work. This is also a reminder to printmakers that you must disclose if your work is a print. |
