Gifts of Art
Submission deadline is Monday May 14, 2010
Gifts of Art is currently accepting proposals for our September 2010 through August 2011 exhibit year. One of the first and most comprehensive arts-in-healthcare programs nationwide, Gifts of Art brings the world of art & music to the University of Michigan Health System. Nine galleries display 50 exhibits a year. They include 2-D and 3-D spaces that are viewed by approximately 10,000 people a day, or about 3.4 million people a year. This makes our galleries some of the most widely visited indoor, non-museum exhibit spaces in the state. Entry Requirements Selections will be made from either digital images on CDs or slides. Emailed JPEG images or in person submissions will not be considered. For both digital submissions and slides, artists must provide a minimum of 12 professional quality images. Group shows should provide a minimum of 24 images. Submitted images must reflect the proposed exhibit. Digital submission guidelines are available on the Gifts of Art website. All submissions must include a completed Exhibit Proposal Form, a numbered reference sheet and a resume and/or biography. Submissions must be received by May 14, 2010. All forms are available on the web at: http://www.med.umich.edu/goa/ Selection Criteria In selecting artwork, Gifts of Art's primary mission is to create a more comfortable and calming atmosphere within the often stressful environment of a hospital and to provide a positive distraction for our patients, visitors and staff. We take into consideration the medical and emotional sensitivities of our viewers. Overt sexual content, violence and nudity will not be considered. We will also avoid pieces that are confrontational, obviously depressing or contain negative medical connotations. Submissions must be received by May 14, 2010. Final notifications will be mailed by July 30, 2010. To receive forms in hard copy, please contact Gifts of Art or download and print them from our website.

ARTISTS BEWARE SCAM - This happened to me also and they sound so convincing - picking individual paintings - they seem so sincere! It happened to many in the New Hampshire Chapter. It happened to me through CAC.
If you receive an e-mail from ANYONE saying they are interested in purchasing your artwork, and says that he is leaving the country soon and wants to make a quick purchase, THIS IS A SCAM. He will want to send you a Cashier's Check in the mail and ask for personal information, such as name, address and cell phone number. DO NOT RESPOND to this e-mail and, if you can, REPORT IT AS FRAUDULENT. Apparently they will try to send you a cashier's check but will overpay you and ask that you send them the difference. DO NOT DEPOSIT THE CHECK, because then they will have your bank account number, too.

The Future of Federal Support for Arts Education On February 1, 2010 President Barack Obama unveiled details for his $3.83 trillion budget proposal for fiscal year 2011.
Many arts advocates are concerned about the impact the president's budget may have on arts education.
In his budget, the president proposes consolidating the U.S. Department of Education's Arts in Education programs into the new $265 million "Effective Teaching and Learning for a Well-Rounded Education" initiative, which would support 6 areas of learning in addition to the arts. There is no indication in President Obama's budget what percentage of this pool would be available to arts education.
In response to consolidation, Robert Lynch, President of Americans for the Arts, stated, "[It] puts us at unease and could lead to a diminished focus on arts education."
In FY10, Congress granted $40 million to the U.S. Department of Education's Arts in Education initiatives.
Americans for the Arts argues Congress should consider the restructuring of Arts in Education in the context of reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (a.k.a. No Child Left Behind). In the meantime, Congress should keep the program intact in FY11.
Congress has started the process of reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which was last updated in 2001 and dubbed the No Child Left Behind Act by President George W. Bush.
While No Child Left Behind designates the arts as a "core academic subject," its implementation has eroded arts education in schools.
"The focus has so much been on test results and core classes, the people who have really gotten the short end of the stick are those teaching electives," Ty Harting, Principal of Palos Hills's Shepard High School told the Chicago Tribune. "We really started to think the importance of the arts was getting lost."
To strengthen arts education in schools, advocates want the Elementary and Secondary Education Act -- in addition to defining the arts as a core subject -- to call for schools to report on student access to the arts.
Americans for the Arts is also urging Congress to conduct dedicated hearings on arts education as it relates to reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
